The ultimate guide to the best playgrounds and parks in Perth! Kids love burning off energy at parks and playgrounds, and Perth’s got some of the best in the world. We’ve seen many new super parks open up recently with some impressive play equipment, features and facilities. Best of all, they’re all FREE!
We’ve listed sand and no-sand parks as we know this can be an issue with some parents not wanting their kids to play in sand. We’ve added categories to filter parks with water features, enclosed fenced playgrounds, partly fenced and non-fenced. Those with open water where you can visit the ducks and enjoy some wildlife during your trip to the park. Many parks have toilets. However, some local community playgrounds don’t, which can be a deal breaker if you’re potty training your little one or want to stay longer than an hour. So we’ve listed parks with toilets available.
Lastly, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee.

Marri Park is a great little spot to take the kids to burn off some extra energy. This park is also dog-friendly, so you could even bring your fur baby along. There is a large grass oval with soccer goals at the top end of the park, so don’t forget your ball for a kick around. The Perry Lakes Reserve is a 200 acre nature reserve found on the eastern edge of the larger Bold Park reserve in Floreat. There are two playgrounds here, set amongst beautiful trees, large grassed areas and two lakes. Situated in the Shorehaven Estate is Shorehaven Boulevard Playground – a lovely, partially fenced playground that is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Shorehaven Boulevard Playground features some play equipment we hadn’t come across before, and Miss 3 had a great time exploring. At one time, the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park was the largest free entry playground in Australia. This beloved playground has now reopened (October 2021) with a thoughtful and fun transformation! We were lucky enough to get a look the day before it opened to the public. And it gets a massive tick of approval from us. Variety Place Playground is located on Saw Avenue in Kings Park The natural design beautifully incorporates the bush, wood, rock and other pieces of nature. The previous park at Saw Avenue also used natural materials, and was enjoyed by Perth patrons for three generations! I love educating myself and the kids while we play! Mawson Park Playground is a little treasure of a park for parents of toddlers and kids who aren’t prone to running off into the road or lake and love climbing! Found on the corner of Moresby St and South Tce in Kensington is Moresby Street Reserve, a great park as it is mostly fenced (the entrance is not gated), encourages imaginative play and has some open grass space too. Across the road on Moresby St is the kid friendly Hoopla Cafe so grab a takeaway or enjoy sitting in before or after your play. As of October 2018, Gascoyne Park in Woodvale opened an exciting new playground. This includes nature-play elements and traditional play equipment to suit kids of all ages. The first thing to catch Miss 4’s attention was the carved wooden crocodile. He is carved out of a log, his back left rough while his head and tail are smooth and painted green. John MacMillan Park next to the library in Victoria Park has just reopened with a brand new nature playground, basketball courts, open grass and more. The new equipment has been designed around the lovely trees giving it a nice combination of natural shade and shade sails. There are toilets conveniently located behind the basketball area. Partridge Way Reserve in Thornlie boasts some excellent equipment. This park is suited to kids aged 3 and up as the climbing frames are quite large. There is an obstacle course for older kids to try out their strength and coordination. If you like to play sports then there is a basketball hoop, cricket pitch and plenty of lawn area to set up on. If you’ve ducked into Woolies at the Banksia Grove Shopping Centre recently, you’ll have probably noticed a new play area near the entrance. The bright and colourful play space has something to amuse most kids. The first thing we noticed was the slide. The ladder for this is built inside what looks like colourful metal crates. As a mum of a busy 2-year-old toddler, I couldn’t be more thrilled with Joondalup Square playground, located opposite the gigantic Bunnings Warehouse. As an added bonus, the well thought out open-air play area is surrounded by eateries! Joondalup Square playground is shaded by two shade sails and is fully fenced and gated. Sometimes small parks deliver a big play and this is the case at Copley Reserve Belmont. We recently stumbled across this small park which is located near the shops on Kooyong Rd Belmont. Copley Reserve Belmont is very much part of the community as the park has a small community garden at the edge and the pathways lead through housing to further grassed areas and benches. Harold Boas Gardens, a lush inner city park, is dappled in sunlight. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic, with lots of shade and park benches. And there’s a playground there too! The tranquil gardens feature small lakes, waterfalls and streams, so keep an eye on toddlers – they will enjoy watch the ducks waddle around. This sand-based playground is toddler-friendly, with various play structures for kids to explore. The playground is currently shaded with sail shades. Penistone Park is a large green park in Greenwood surrounded by tall shady gum trees. A new playground has recently been installed, and it is a delightful mix of traditional play equipment and nature play. We had an absolute blast at Bathers Park, the newest addition to Alkimos Beach. Nestled alongside the Alkimos Beach foreshore, Bathers Park stretches across 2.5 hectares at the ocean end of Leatherback Boulevard. This vibrant beach-themed was an instant hit with my kids and completely captured their imaginations! The highlight of our visit was the impressive surf rescue play tower, soaring seven meters high. Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hillarys which has been dubbed Jacob’s Ladder of the North due to the 21m fitness staircase opened in September 2019. The multipurpose fitness hub is not only for fitness junkies, it also a great spot for families to stay fit and active together. Rivergums Park in Baldivis is a great little park. It has a small play equipment area suitable for Toddlers and Climbing Equipment for the older kids. There is also a big Flying Fox & Platform for the older kids (and adults too!). There is plenty of grassed areas for picnics and also benches placed throughout for sitting and watching the kids play. Santa Ana Park Currambine – hidden away behind the Currambine shops, down Santa Ana Mews is a little gem of a park. Tall trees surround a few grassy areas, perfect for kicking around a ball and provide shade to most of the park. Just 5 minutes drive from Garden City Shopping Centre, atop Wireless Hill, is a beautiful is Wireless Hill Nature Playspace. We arrived in the middle of the day, and amazingly the play area is naturally shaded by the surrounding trees, even at noon. Situated on the beach in Amberton Estate, Eglinton, this brand new playground is perfect for toddlers and is also fenced! Whilst not fully fenced, the majority is gated/fenced with the only escape being some wooden logs that leave it open, parents can sit on the grass near the logs through which I did, to catch any little escapees! Hillcrest Park in Bayswater now has a new playground nestled on the edge of the oval between the Jamison-Frame Pavilion and the cricket practice cages. The first thing we noted at Hillcrest Park was the base is not sand. A definite plus if you don’t want sandy little feet in your car afterwards!
