There are two car parks at Chidley Point Reserve. The upper level car park allows parking for a large number of cars. Point Fraser Foreshore Reserve is a must visit if you’re heading into the city for the day with older kids. The equipment in this park is more suited towards school-aged children due to the equipment and steep hills around the landscape of the park. We made our journey to the Point Fraser Reserve directly from the city, it’s very easy to find if you just follow the river edge. We came across a boardwalk which headed out towards the centre of an inlet from the main river. The kids enjoyed the walk and spotting wildlife in the river and the Read more…
Lake Leschenaultia is a man-made lake situated in the country town of Chidlow, 50 minutes drive from Perth City. McCallum Park is a large, but seemingly underused, park located near that difficult to negotiate junction between Shepperton Road and Canning Hwy. It’s accessed from Taylor St (off Canning Hwy) and there are plenty of parking spaces (some shaded) on both Taylor St. and the adjacent Garland St. Toilets (LHS) and parking on Taylor St. There are male and female toilets on both Taylor and Garland Streets and these were….well…what you would expect in a park. Pretty basic, but clean and functioning. The park itself is huge – plenty of space for an impromptu post-picnic footy or cricket match. BBQ, Read more…
The Zig Zag is a very narrow and winding road, in the shape of… you guessed it, a zig zag! It was once the route travelled by steam trains, carrying timber gradually down the escarpment, from Canning Mills to the Midland Junction. The train tracks were dismantled in 1949, but you can still visit the Kalamunda Train Station and an old locomotive that sits proudly at the platform at the Kalamunda History Museum. You begin a drive down the Zig Zag at the top of the hill, on Lascelles Parade in Gooseberry Hill. With only enough room for the width of one car, it is a one way road. The Read more…

Bells Rapids Brigadoon is where the Avon and Swan rivers meet and it’s one of my favourite spots for a family picnic at any time of year. Located towards the very end of West Swan Road in the Swan Valley heading towards Great Northern highway, is a great little spot to bring the kids to teach them a little bit of history about our traditional landowners and take in the valley view. The Yagan Memorial Park officially opened in 2010 and brings to an end a long campaign by the Noongar people to reunite the head of the warrior Yagan with his body, which is believed to have Read more…
John Oldham Park is a bit of a hidden gem and the last place you would expect alongside a busy freeway intersection so close to the city, but once you have found it you will often find that you have the place to yourself, except for the odd cyclist on the path down to the Mounts Bay Road. Much of the parkland is surrounded by a lake and nature reserve, the car park is relatively small and is paid parking, but once you cross over the bridge you get straight to the playground and open space that kids can run Read more…
The Perry Lakes Reserve is a 200 acre nature reserve found on the eastern edge of the larger Bold Park reserve in Floreat. There are two playgrounds here, set amongst beautiful trees, large grassed areas and two lakes. The older playground on the western side of the reserve is shaded by trees, it also has the extra sun protection of shade sails throughout. There is a way to feel like you’ve planned a quality family outing, without driving two hours to get there. Churchman Brook Dam is located in the Perth hills just a short drive from Armadale. Spring is the perfect time to visit Lesmurdie Falls, found on the escarpment of the Perth Hills in Mundy Regional Park. And you don’t need to travel very far. Lesmurdie Falls is just a 30 minute drive east from Perth CBD. If we’ve had decent rainfall over winter, then the falls will be flowing and there are also a host of wildflowers on display too. We even spotted a bright blue fairy wren, though I wasn’t quick enough to take a picture! From the carpark on Falls Road, it’s an easy stroll along concrete and gravel paths to the stunning 50 meter waterfall and the two main lookout points. It’s fine for younger Read more…

They have a chain that positions across the chest to prevent users jumping into the centre of the swing area and colliding with others. If younger children are using the swings you need to keep a close eye on them as the chain Read more…
