The ultimate guide to the best playgrounds and parks in Perth! Kids love burning off energy at parks and playgrounds, and Perth’s got some of the best in the world. We’ve seen many new super parks open up recently with some impressive play equipment, features and facilities. Best of all, they’re all FREE!
We’ve listed sand and no-sand parks as we know this can be an issue with some parents not wanting their kids to play in sand. We’ve added categories to filter parks with water features, enclosed fenced playgrounds, partly fenced and non-fenced. Those with open water where you can visit the ducks and enjoy some wildlife during your trip to the park. Many parks have toilets. However, some local community playgrounds don’t, which can be a deal breaker if you’re potty training your little one or want to stay longer than an hour. So we’ve listed parks with toilets available.
Lastly, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee.

Opened in 2020, this great park in Australind makes a great stopover on the way down south. It takes its name from the local Wardandi Noongar language. Karragarup means “place of crabs”, as the bay the park sits on is well known for it’s blue swimmer crab population. Riverton Jetty playground is located next to the Lo Quay River Cafe in Wilson. Riverton Jetty playground is a nature based playground that features 2 slides, 2 swings, a spinning rope frame, a hammock swing and lots of different balance/walking challenges. Wyong Reserve in Bentley is a great little park with a lot going on. The playground is fully fenced and has a pathway running around it that is designed as a road to ride scooters and bikes along. There a few large speed humps, and we said next time we come we will have to bring the scooter. There are benches around the playground and an undercover area with BBQs and picnic benches. Fee Fi Fo Fum… We smell a brilliant new playground (opened January 2019)! The “Giant Playground” at Bushmead housing estate is found in Perth’s foothills, just minutes from Midland and Kalamunda. Here, there’s a giant-theme, so kids will love to spot all the giants hiding in the park… There’s footprints, noses, eyes, toes and more! Hillcrest Park in Bayswater now has a new playground nestled on the edge of the oval between the Jamison-Frame Pavilion and the cricket practice cages. The first thing we noted at Hillcrest Park was the base is not sand. A definite plus if you don’t want sandy little feet in your car afterwards! Miss 4 went straight the platform stairs to then explore the top layer of the playground. Highland Range, nestled in the foothills of the Darling Ranges and surrounded by nature, is a new estate in Jane Brook with a brand new playground! The wood chip playground includes a variety of natural play areas for children to explore. There there are stepping logs, a large climbing ladder, stepping poles, balancing logs, and a web swing. The Eden Beach Lookout and Playspace is a brand new section of Eden Beach estate in Jindalee has just opened (Dec 2021) and it’s great for the older kids! Featuring a basketball court, rock climbing wall, parkour, skate/scooter ramps and a huge grassy area it’s a beautiful spot to spend a few hours. The new Tomato Lake all-abilities playground has opened and it appears to be a big hit as it was very busy when we visited. The playground is in front between the cafe and the bbq picnic area. The bbq area has also been refreshed with new picnic tables. The playground has been designed to suit toddlers through to older kids, including those with disabilities. Need to do groceries? Kids need a play? Combine them both at Forrestfield Forum. The Junction is the new community space at Forrestfield Forum and includes a nature playground and alfresco area. The play area is under shade sale and partly fenced along the side that is close to the car park. The whole area is on soft fall rubber. There are benches around the area. Banksia Grove Nature Playground is a small nature-based playground located between Dragonfly Road and Potoroo Street on the Eastern Side of Banksia Grove. The wooden play equipment is perfect for helping children with balance, coordination and confidence. The equipment features balance posts with rope, twisted net, shaky bridge, balancing beam and a little wooden table with posts for chairs. Katanning All Ages Playground is a one of a kind playground, the type of playground that creates memories that last a lifetime! Just around the corner from the Alexander Heights IGA, is Lemongrass Park, a lovely shaded playground with traditional equipment and some nature play elements. One of the main features that caught our eye was the rope equipment. The much awaited Akimos Beach Fitness Park is now open! If you are into fitness, then this park has it all. It features a “ freeletics “ area where you train with your own body weight, and also an area to practice parkour ( Miss 7 loved this ). McGiffen Park Alkimos is in a new Alkimos estate perfect for older kids. The park is also perfect if you are after a quieter play. The estate is accessed via only one road, which is still under construction, meaning most people probably don’t actually know of its existence. I actually had to pull over and check I wasn’t driving into a building site. But once you reach the park you realise it’s the perfect spot to let some big kids run wild. Let the games begin! If your kids love little athletics they’ll absolutely love Pegasus Park in Bennett Springs!!! The Olympic themed play space which opened in late February 2018 is completely different from any other playground in Perth, it includes a range of kids’ activities inspired by little athletics, with plenty of space to kick a ball, swing a bat or shoot hoops. While we were all locked out of playgrounds due to COVID-19, Floreat Beach Playspace had a total makeover! The focal point of the playground is the ‘Kraken’, a cephalopod-like sea monster which I think looks a little like a blue-ringed octopus! The wooden climbing structure features climbing obstacles and slide. You can also hide in the belly of the beast. The Caterpillar Playground is a favourite amongst families in Mandurah. Parents love it due to the fact it is enclosed and kids love it because there is so much to do. Also known as Milgar Street Reserve, the Caterpillar Playground is easily accessible via Park Road with plenty of parking available. Access is also available via Reserve Drive for those on foot. Willespie Park is a great little playground located in Pearsall, the playground isn’t fenced but is situated away from any roads. Willespie Park includes a good sized playground with equipment to suit a range of children. Unfortunately, the playground isn’t shaded so bring along sunscreen and a hat. William Henry Oval Caversham is situated nearby to Caversham Community Centre, and close to Suffolk Street before Colorino Avenue. The oval itself hosts a lot of community sports and also has two playgrounds that are worth a visit. Ready, set, go! The Harrisdale Skate and Scooter Park is a brilliant spot for children big and small to get active. The Heron Park Estate has created a scooter track, as well as a small skate park, and even basketball/football facilities – so remember to pack a ball too! Just outside of Mandurah, tucked away in suburbia is Meadow Springs Quarry Adventure Park. Its size is deceiving from the road, with a lush green grassed area and playground visible, however, it extends back and down into the quarry. The first playground you come across is a traditional style one, with a lovely big spider net swing, fun stepping stones, slides, stairs, climbing challenges and some rockers. Nestled in a leafy corner by Lake Claremont is a lovely naturally shaded playground. Lake Claremont Playground is a good mix of nature play and traditional playground equipment. The playground base is sand surrounded by grass and wood chips. There are no shade sails, but most of the equipment is naturally shaded by the large surrounding trees. Alkimos Park is situated in a newly established family suburb estate, north of Butler (NOR). The park offers school-aged kids lots of nature play equipment as well as some interesting items I’ve not seen in other parks yet. Alkimos Park is a mix of sand and soft fall with a main wooded climbing structure, nets and slide. This is quite shaded whilst you’re in the structure but otherwise, the park has no shade to offer until the trees mature around it. Escarpment Park is a community playspace for local residents in Alkimos. The park is a large open playspace set in sand, grass and softfall. Suitable for kids 12months+ with some great pieces of play equipment for older kids. A pathway meanders around the park great for scooters and bikes. Stirling Civic Gardens Stirling Civic Gardens is a hidden gem. Concealed from the road, it is a lovely park with manicured gardens and plenty of shade provided by the large trees. The playground area has recently undergone an upgrade, and there is now more play equipment than ever for your children to enjoy. The park features small lakes and water features, home to ducks and other water birds. There are paved paths winding their way through the gardens. A brand new play space has just opened up at Centenary Park in Belmont and it’s so good! Designed for younger kids, the playground is fully fenced with a mixture of soft fall and sand. The UFO-inspired Bob Gordon Reserve Play Space is out-of-this-world fun! The fully fenced playground features everything from UFOs, swings, flying foxes, slides, and water play to all the essentials like toilets, BBQs, picnic shelters, shade and ample parking. The new Shelley Beach playground is a great playground to visit. It’s right on the river, and around the enclosed playground is plenty of grass to kick a ball on, BBQs and gazebos and, of course, the beautiful river. My 10-year-old was impressed with the park, especially the X-park obstacle course. The course is set up with a starting point and different obstacles throughout, including climbing, balancing and swinging. Lake Monger is now home to an exciting new adventure playground! The playground has been specifically designed for children over the age of 5 who love a challenge! Arriving at the playground, my 5 year old couldn’t wait to tackle the ninja rope obstacle course, or as he called it the Roblox obby. Canning River Regional Park is a large park and wetlands area covering about 6kms located around the Canning River. We usually go to the Kent St Weir area which also has the Canning River Cafe there but recently we discovered another playground a short walk away. This new playground has been designed based on feedback from the community and includes nature and adventure play and plenty of natural shade. In Dayton, there is a new playground on Arthur Street known as Dayton Neighboured Park. It is suitable for kids of all ages, with two primary play structures to choose from. There’s a new (opened November 2023) playground in the Perth foothills suburb of Bushmead! While it’s much smaller than the estate’s “Giant Park”, the Treetop Park Playground has plenty of equipment for kids that love to explore and climb. It’s shaded by mature trees too! The 6-meter timber tower structure features a tube slide (currently under repair – Dec ’23). Very small children may have trouble reaching this, as there’s a steep ladder to climb to get to it. The newly completed Lions Park is a race track/road inspired park. It is only a small park but if you have a little one who is learning to scoot or ride this would be a good park to practice at. My little girl is scooter crazy at the moment so she really enjoyed herself. Features include a petrol pump and road signs. Pine Park is a hidden gem in Darlington, in the Perth Hills. I grew up in the hills and my parents still live there. On today’s visit we thought we’d try somewhere different to the usual park. I’m glad we did, it was a very pleasant morning and more importantly little Miss had a great time. It is a small playground with a castle theme.
