The ultimate guide to the best playgrounds and parks in Perth! Kids love burning off energy at parks and playgrounds, and Perth’s got some of the best in the world. We’ve seen many new super parks open up recently with some impressive play equipment, features and facilities. Best of all, they’re all FREE!
We’ve listed sand and no-sand parks as we know this can be an issue with some parents not wanting their kids to play in sand. We’ve added categories to filter parks with water features, enclosed fenced playgrounds, partly fenced and non-fenced. Those with open water where you can visit the ducks and enjoy some wildlife during your trip to the park. Many parks have toilets. However, some local community playgrounds don’t, which can be a deal breaker if you’re potty training your little one or want to stay longer than an hour. So we’ve listed parks with toilets available.
Lastly, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee.

Atwell Oval Playground has had a complete upgrade and it’s quite awesome! The main feature is a large spider-web climbing frame. There are a smaller climbing spider-web frame and monkey bars. A 6-swing swing set! Perfect for the “Who can go the highest?” competitions. There is so much space for ball games. Just 5 minutes drive from Garden City Shopping Centre, atop Wireless Hill, is a beautiful is Wireless Hill Nature Playspace. We arrived in the middle of the day, and amazingly the play area is naturally shaded by the surrounding trees, even at noon. It was so quiet and peaceful, with by birdsong come from the surrounding bush land. Miss almost 3 really enjoyed Wireless Hill Nature Playspace . Found on the corner of Moresby St and South Tce in Kensington is Moresby Street Reserve, a great park as it is mostly fenced (the entrance is not gated), encourages imaginative play and has some open grass space too. Across the road on Moresby St is the kid friendly Hoopla Cafe so grab a takeaway or enjoy sitting in before or after your play. Whiteman Park Dog Park is a little known secret among the dog community The fully fenced and grassed 2.5-hectare playground has a doggie obstacle course and plenty of natural shade from mature trees. There’s even a separate enclosure for smaller dog breeds. There’s a 500m walkway around the circumference of the park so you can exercise yourself as well as your friend. Clarkson Reserve, Maylands Clarkson Reserve is a hidden gem in the leafy suburb of Maylands. It features a small nature playground, bike and scooter paths and gorgeous river views. On arriving, Miss 4 raced to the play area. This is mostly sand-based and features wooden balancing beams and flat logs to hop across. Canning River Regional Park is a large park and wetlands area covering about 6kms located around the Canning River. We usually go to the Kent St Weir area which also has the Canning River Cafe there but recently we discovered another playground a short walk away. This new playground has been designed based on feedback from the community and includes nature and adventure play and plenty of natural shade. Halliday Park is a quiet park with lots of open green space located behind The Bayswater Hotel. The park is named after an early Bayswater settler, Henry Thomas Halliday, and as of May 2018 the playground area has undergone an upgrade with a new play structure and fresh sand now in place. I live nowhere near Whitby but after seeing some pictures online of their nature-based playground I knew I had to visit – the playground opened in mid 2016 and is very unique. Whitby playground is located 40 minutes South-East of Perth. The playground borders a nature walk trail so there is plenty of things to see and explore. Bayswater Riverside Gardens located along Milne and King William Streets is a fabulous playground to visit with toddlers. Bayswater Riverside Gardens has great age-appropriate play equipment, fully fenced and gated, features rubber soft fall and is covered with shade sails. Variety Place Playground is located on Saw Avenue in Kings Park The natural design beautifully incorporates the bush, wood, rock and other pieces of nature. The previous park at Saw Avenue also used natural materials, and was enjoyed by Perth patrons for three generations! I love educating myself and the kids while we play! Olives Reserve is a great little park in Como with a brand new playground. The playground is sand based and features 2 slides, rope ladders, a fireman’s pole, wobbly bridge, rock climbing wall and swings. We had a great time racing through the equipment like a mini obstacle course and trying to catch each other. The rock climbing wall was a favourite with miss 3 spending lots of time trying to navigate and work it out. The Kent St Weir area has just got even better with the newly opened Pump Track. The pump track is located on Kent St as you drive into the main car park area. The last few times we have visited the area the car park has been full and parking has overflowed to the adjoining streets. Brabham has recently added a new park to Ariella estate, Ariella Adventure Park, and it’s absolutely delightful. The park features an awesome dragonfly play structure which consists of two rope climbing frames and one giant slide. The kids loved climbing up high at the top of the frame then walking along, before doing their best speed down the slide! It kept them entertained for ages! Sandy Beach Reserve is one of Bassendean’s most well-known natural open spaces. It now has one of the most impressive playgrounds I’ve seen. Sandy Beach Playspace has been created for children of all ages, with play equipment and nature elements for everyone to enjoy. Opened September 2019, the simple Paxhill Park Nature Playground can provide hours of entertainment to children that love to be in the great outdoors and have a wild imagination. Harbour View Park is a partially fenced toddler friendly playground in Hillarys. The playground consists of a boat inspired climbing frame, with small ladders, a rock climbing wall, enclosed slide, steering wheel and speaking tube. The Rannoch Tay Reserve in Hamersley offers a number of different experiences for Perth families. Hobart Street Playground is situated on the corner of Hobart and Auckland Streets in North Perth. Being a small neighbourhood park it doesn’t have fancy play equipment, BBQs, picnic tables or toilets. Hilton Park is tucked away in the middle of Duncraig. You can access it from the end of 6 cul-de-sacs, one being Hilton Place. This is great as there are no busy roads running alongside it though it means there isn’t a lot of parking available. Hilton Park is a large park with plenty of tall trees offering shade. Frederick Stubbs Park is a small park right on the coast in Quinns Rocks. It offers a small grassed area and a playground set on sand. The playground has a limestone retaining wall/steps, which along with the hill, would slow down any dashes towards the road which is nearby. Promenade Park is tucked amongst apartment buildings in Burswood. It has recently been updated with new playground equipment. We stopped by for a play recently and found it had a lot of different activities to keep little ones occupied. There were a number of board activities such as a word search, ball maze and line up 4 which added extra interaction and different activities to the usual playground equipment. The Elizabeth Quay Playground is a maritime-themed playground that has been designed in collaboration with Nature Play. The leafy inner city park is made up of a soft fall play area with a large metal play frame that features two slides, “shop” window, climbing nets, ramps, monkey bars, a climbing wall and more. Aviary Creek Park is a fun and creative play space in the growing suburb of Aveley. The one-of-a-kind playground has been built around two natural lakes and the main feature is a giant water wheel with twisting tunnel slides!
