As part of Perth Zoo’s Master Plan 2040, Perth Zoo’s playground has been revitalized into a bigger and better nature-based play space accessible to children of all abilities to enjoy. This award-winning playground is designed to celebrate Perth Zoo’s animals and their work in conservation and breeding, and it has already been recognised as having the region’s best landscape architecture! This state-of-the-art playground includes a ‘cloud’ deck, climbable giant numbat, 40m rope tunnels, feather hammocks, sand pit and nature play trail.
At the heart of the playground is the ‘cloud’ deck, which has a mist system that stimulates clouds while model cockatoos fly above.
The eye-catching misting effect caught the girls’ attention as it regularly sprinkled cool mist from the top. Looking overhead, you will be surprised to see the model cockatoos—as if they were flying through the clouds!
Children can climb up to the elevated deck using the climbing net or rope tunnels. It is also accessible via the ramp from the footpath. There’s only one slide and nest swing here, so it does get quite busy.
The striking feature of this playground is the rope tunnels—at 40 m long. They are one of the country’s longest overhead brachiating ropes!
Missy 6 enjoyed the rope tunnels, and it was relatively easy for her to get through them. The rope tunnels are at various heights, which makes it an exciting experience to get across them!
Missy 9 had a hard time challenging the brachiating ropes.
The other highlight for the girls was the climbable endangered giant numbatwhich stands at 3m tall! Children can climb onto it, get on top of it or inside it!
There are also quiet zones situated beside the playground, which has large feather hammocks to climb onto.
There is a nature play trail with climbing logs for children to explore.
Younger toddlers will enjoy the smaller slide near the sand play area. The sand pit has a cubby dome structure, a smallish cave for hiding, and a raised sandpit table.
There is a wheelchair-accessible trampoline to add to the fun.
A communication board is located at the main lawn end of the playground, or you can find a PDF version of it here.
While the kids play, you can enjoy the brand-new café overlooking the playground. Habitat is the new open and contemporary restaurant where you can dine or grab a takeaway coffee. You can also indulge in their wine bar too! The best part is you can skip the queue and scan to order ahead with the QR code found on the Zoo’s map! Vending machines with snacks and drinks options are also located around the playground.
Accessible toilets are conveniently located just around the corner of the playground, and there are plenty of benches all around it for parents to get some rest while supervising the kids.
