John Oldham Park is a bit of a hidden gem and the last place you would expect alongside a busy freeway intersection so close to the city, but once you have found it you will often find that you have the place to yourself, except for the odd cyclist on the path down to the Mounts Bay Road. This is a disability friendly playground for both able and less able bodied children. The play structure can be access by a wheelchair friendly ramp and features throughout the structure. Children with good upper body strength can use the various bars to pull themselves up onto the playframe or guide themselves down. The playground at Yokine Reserve is fabulous for kids of all ages and abilities! It is fully fenced AND double-gated, perfect for keeping little escape artists contained. Yokine Reserve Playground has such a great array of play equipment that is suitable for kids of all ages and abilities. The playground has two roundabouts which Miss 4 loved! The beautiful Lake Jualbup playground is located in the leafy suburb of Shenton Park, and is surrounded by a lovely well-kept park with rolling green lawns. “Jualbup” is an aboriginal term meaning ‘a place where water rises in the season of spring’. The lake can dry up during the summer months, but when we visited it was full and had a variety of pretty birdlife including Black Swans and assorted ducks. Point Walter is a beautiful spot on the south bank of the Swan River perfect for picnics, swimming and playing in the not one but two playgrounds! The first playground is situated right next to The Walters River Cafe – which is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch coffee and cakes. If you have older children and fancy a relaxing lunch you could grab a table on the veranda that adjoins the playground so that the kids can play whilst you eat. South Perth Esplanade Playground is set within the Sir James Mitchell Park and is a short walk from the Mends Street Jetty making this an ideal playground to visit on public transport. The playground is sand based and covered with shade sails. South Perth Esplanade Playground overlooks the River Swan and is surrounded by mature trees, large grassy areas, a cycle path, picnic shelters and BBQs.  Making this a great playground and park for birthday parties, picnics and playdates. Mueller Park Playspace is clean, fun, fresh and imaginative for all ages, but we love it especially for its safety, accessibility and appeal to toddlers. It is easily accessible from the train (Fremantle line, West Leederville stop), but parking can sometimes prove challenging. Mueller Park Playspace was commissioned in 2009 as an initiative to improve facilities for children with disabilities.  Equal access is catered for through the inclusion of “activities and spaces that allow the exploration of the physical world through the use of sight, touch, sound and smell”.  Specialised play equipment was included for use by children with a range of Read more…

Bayswater Riverside Gardens located along Milne and King William Streets is a fabulous playground to visit with toddlers. Bayswater Riverside Gardens has great age-appropriate play equipment, fully fenced and gated, features rubber soft fall and is covered with shade sails. There is a set of swings that caters for both babies, toddlers and older children. A fun roundabout A fun spinning pole that Miss 2 loved! A low-level climbing frame complete with walkways, bridges, tunnels, cubby houses and 3 different height slides.     A fun springy seesaw and surfboard.     For older children, there is a climbing net. On the Eastern Mandurah Foreshore there is a lovely playground overlooking the river. The playground is fully shaded and based on a soft fall surface. The playframe is full of slides, ladders, climbing walls and tunnel to entertain toddlers and kids. There are a few other play items in the playground, including a big yellow boat, rockers, monkey bars and swings. This was a big attraction for the older kids, I’ve no idea what to call it..so I’ll leave that up to you! Alkimos Park is situated in a newly established family suburb estate, north of Butler (NOR). The park offers school-aged kids lots of nature play equipment as well as some interesting items I’ve not seen in other parks yet. Alkimos Park is a mix of sand and soft fall with a main wooded climbing structure, nets and slide.  This is quite shaded whilst you’re in the structure but otherwise, the park has no shade to offer until the trees mature around it. Deep Water Point Park has everything you could possibly want for a mums playgroup meet-up, coffee & cake with friends or on your own, stroll next to the river, family BBQ or family breakfast/lunch/dinner.  All that aside it’s also a stunning view of the Perth city skyline. The park is fully fenced and gated (one entrance and exit) and is covered by shade sails and mature trees shade. Walter Padbury Playground is located in the Walter Padbury Park sporting complex in Thornlie. It is easily accessed from all car parks by a large internal path network so you should never have a problem finding a car park space! Pioneer Park is an unusual playspace situated next to the Canning River in Gosnells. The playground is below street level and you enter via a ‘tree top’ long walkway which is pram friendly and great fun for scooting down. The Canning River runs next to the playground but it is well fenced off so there is no danger of little people getting close to the water whilst your back is turned. Hobart Street Playground is situated on the corner of Hobart and Auckland Streets in North Perth. Being a small neighbourhood park it doesn’t have fancy play equipment, BBQs, picnic tables or toilets. What makes it popular with many families is that it is fully fenced and gated, has large shade sails over all the play equipment and had a large grassed area perfect for throwing down a picnic blanket or playing ball games.   It is right across the road from the Hobart Deli which offers breakfast and lunch and takeaway coffee. Mirror Park in Ocean Reef is a large oval field and play area consisting of a playground suitable for toddlers, a skate park and toilet block. Parking surrounds the oval as well as set off from the main road in front of the playground.  It’s not fenced or shaded so not suitable for toddlers prone to running off or during the height of summer.  There are a few mature trees providing shade around the park and playground if you want to grab a picnic. Whitfords Nodes Park is a beautiful park for family BBQs, picnics and mums’ groups during, Autumn, Spring and Winter months.  It’s also a great place to walk through with scooters/bikes if you’re heading out for a family walk. The Whitfords Nodes Park area consists of several playframes, slides, sandpits, BBQ’s and picnic shelters and lots of trees providing shade if you’re having a picnic. Lake Monger Reserve is a fantastic destination for a family walk in Perth with kids of all ages. There are a few parking spots around Lake Monger Reserve, 3 of which are on Lake Monger Drive.  If you use the car park nearest St Vincents Avenue you’ll see a wishing well and the largest playground in the reserve. Pitstop Playground is located at Discovery Park, Banksia Grove and it’s pretty special – in fact I’ve not seen anything like it! The central theme of Pitstop Playgrounds, if you haven’t already guessed it, is racing. It has a great racing track that twists and turns around the park complete with Pitstop area where you can chalk your names up on the blackboards and race each other. Rivergums Park in Baldivis is a great little park. It has a small play equipment area suitable for Toddlers and Climbing Equipment for the older kids. There is also a big Flying Fox & Platform for the older kids (and adults too!). There is plenty of grassed areas for picnics and also benches placed throughout for sitting and watching the kids play. Although there are no shade sails covering the equipment there are plenty of trees that provide shade. Dianella Open Space playground is a great play area for kids of all ages with a huge amount of different and challenging activities to keep every kid entertained for hours! The toddler section is full of the latest playground equipment including a few pairs of binoculars for the kids to try out their fantasy play. Herdsman Lake Regional Park is a great location for a family walk, play and picnic. There are 2 playgrounds around the lake, one at Glendalough Open Space and the other at Popeye Lake Parkland. Glendalough Open Space is a lovely little play area with parking directly next to it off the main road access.  This area has swings, seesaw, flying fox, slides and numerous climbing frames to entertain kids of all ages. South Beach playground in South Fremantle is perfect for pirate lovers! It’s a boat themed playground complete with a large climbing area, a double slide and a set of swings. Kids will love taking their Pirate play to another level with climbing the mast, walking the plank and firing the cannons. In addition to the two swings there is also a hammock swing. Escarpment Park is a community playspace for local residents in Alkimos. The park is a large open playspace set in sand, grass and softfall.  Suitable for kids 12months+ with some great pieces of play equipment for older kids.  A pathway meanders around the park great for scooters and bikes. One of the main features of the park is this huge long tubular slide and cubby house fortress.  Great for fantasy play! Greenhouse Park is a unique space located in Mandurah Mandurah Junction is a newly developing 15-hectare site located next to Mandurah train station which will offer high-quality residential development, a vibrant community with a distinctive laid-back Mandurah vibe. McCallum Park is a large, but seemingly underused, park located near that difficult to negotiate junction between Shepperton Road and Canning Hwy. It’s accessed from Taylor St (off Canning Hwy) and there are plenty of parking spaces (some shaded) on both Taylor St. and the adjacent Garland St. Toilets (LHS) and parking on Taylor St. There are male and female toilets on both Taylor and Garland Streets and these were….well…what you would expect in a park. Langley Park Playground is an ideal playground if you’re visiting the city on a family day trip as it’s conveniently located in East Perth.  The playground is suitable for kids age 3yrs plus (despite the sign saying 4yrs) and there are toilets directly next to the park. The park is covered with shade sails and is partially fenced.  Bear in mind this playground is located on a main road and although it is fenced facing towards the road the other side of the park is open. Brampton Park in Butler is nestled next to a manmade lake which has lots of ducks and birds and big rocks amongst some shallow parts of the lake for the kids to climb on (you just need to remind them to be careful as some are slippery as our Mister 5 fell in). There is plenty of grass and open space to run around and there are also paths that meander around the park so it’s great for the kids to bring their scooter or bike. Delamere Park Playground in Currambine delivers on everything you want to keep kids aged 2yrs onwards entertained and active for hours.  The only thing it doesn’t deliver on is shade and this park does sit on a main thoroughfare road. The park has plenty of off-road and on-road parking and has the wonderful benefit of being within spitting distance of a Dome Cafe Restaurant.  There’s also a toilet block.   Continuing the theme of thoughtful and useful facilities in this park are the 2 double BBQ plates and shaded picnic tables, 2 water fountains and ample benches scattered around the Read more…

Jackadder Lake Reserve is a lovely family park ideal for a morning or afternoon of fun play and scooting/cycling around the beautiful lake and spotting the wildlife.  The playground is suitable for kids of all age and is set in a mixture of sand and soft play flooring. Kids can enjoy wiggly slides, straight slides, and curly slides all of which aren’t particularly steep so great for the toddlers. Within the newly built Amberton Estate is Eglinton Park Playground,  AKA “The Flying Fox Park” The park is overlooked by residential houses and a relatively quiet road with ample roadside parking.  I would suggest the park is more suited to older kids rather than toddlers due to the openness directly onto the road, extremely steep stairs, slope and slides. The biggest attraction to this park is the huge Flying Fox (suitable for 5years plus) which is fantastic fun for the adults as well! Point Fraser Foreshore Reserve is a must visit if you’re heading into the city for the day with older kids. The equipment in this park is more suited towards school-aged children due to the equipment and steep hills around the landscape of the park. We made our journey to the Point Fraser Reserve directly from the city, it’s very easy to find if you just follow the river edge. As a mum of a busy 2-year-old toddler, I couldn’t be more thrilled with Joondalup Square playground, located opposite the gigantic Bunnings Warehouse. As an added bonus, the well thought out open-air play area is surrounded by eateries! Joondalup Square playground is shaded by two shade sails and is fully fenced and gated. Booyeembara Park located on Montreal Street in Fremantle is gorgeous parkland with plenty of open space, bush land, walking circuits and a central man-made lake. Located within the park is a small quirky playground. The centre piece of the playground is an unusual 5 way swing.  The swings are designed for children aged 6 – 12 years. They have a chain that positions across the chest to prevent users jumping into the centre of the swing area and colliding with others. The recent addition of a Nature Playground gives you another reason to visit the already fabulous Mawson Park in Hillarys. The nature playground is situated across the lake from the original ‘manufactured’ playground and although smaller, offers just as much fun for the kids. It’s particularly good if your child needs to practice their balancing, and if they enjoy sand play. Fantastic new playgrounds that have a strong focus on nature play are popping up all over the Perth area. Researchers at the University of WA have found that natural playgrounds provide children with more opportunities than typical pre-formed playgrounds to develop gross-motor skills. Bannister Creek Nature Playground in Lynwood combines traditional play equipment with more natural elements, providing opportunities for children to use their imagination and explore. Riverton Jetty playground is located next to the Lo Quay River Cafe in Wilson. Riverton Jetty playground is a nature based playground that features 2 slides, 2 swings, a spinning rope frame, a hammock swing and lots of different balance/walking challenges.   The playground is decorated with lots of new plant, animal wood carvings and sand/water flow activities.   The playground has a fence between it and the road and between it and river keeping the kids safe (please note, it is not fully enclosed). Just North of the river, nestled within the shade trees, is a nature park like no other!  The Russell Brown Adventure Park in Mosman Park is located in Minim Cove, on the bank of the Swan River, just beyond the Mosman Park Tennis Club.    Rusell Brown adventure park blends in well with the bushland, and you would hardly even know it was there. It’s well hidden in the bush with natural structures to climb on that are mostly made of wood, stone, and ropes. Whiteman Park Dog Park is a little known secret among the dog community The fully fenced and grassed 2.5-hectare playground has a doggie obstacle course and plenty of natural shade from mature trees. There’s even a separate enclosure for smaller dog breeds. There’s a 500m walkway around the circumference of the park so you can exercise yourself as well as your friend. Water taps and troughs are also available inside each enclosure.  You can park yourself on one of the many benches provided whilst your dog enjoys the company of others.
