All Things to Do for Kids in Perth

Kalamunda’s Stirk Park was a favourite of mine, back in the 80s when I was growing up in the Perth Hills. The park has long been a popular location for mothers group get-togethers and family picnics. The snazzy new playground and skate park at Stirk Park has just opened (Nov 2023) after a long-awaited redevelopment. We all know shopping with kids isn’t easy, but the kids will be begging to go to Mandurah Forum’s beach-inspired playground! The state-of-the-art playground is part of the $350 million redevelopment, completed in March 2018 the two fully enclosed play areas are the perfect place to take a break while the kids burn off some energy. Banks Reserve is located in Mouth Lawley on the banks of the Swan River, the play space is bearly recognisable after an extensive redevelopment. The new nature-based playground has been cleverly designed around the huge preexisting trees which offer plenty of shade! The treehouse is definitely a firm favourite and features a spiral slide and climbing net, kids can even climb the fork of the tree. Orangutan Park in Golden Bay is a welcome addition to the area and provides a fantastic green open space and cool new play park. In the heart of Beldon is Haddington Park Public Playground. It’s a mix of traditional play equipment and nature play. It’s a real gem with something for everyone. The main play structure in the playground is surrounded with soft white sand, and features a slide, a fireman pole, a steering wheel, climbing ropes, monkey bars and ladders. Located in Viveash on the Swan River, Reg Bond Reserve includes walk and cycle trails that link it to Woodbridge Riverside Park. The John George Trail is a 5.5km, with both a gravel and paved option, which gives access for walkers, bikers, wheelchairs and prams. Neil McDougall Park is a leafy park with a great playground for kids of all ages in the heart of Como. The first thing that grabbed Miss 3’s attention when we arrived here was the flying fox. This has a small platform to climb up and launch from. With a bit of help from me, she had several rides. She loved it! Smiles all around when she hopped off. The Rainbow Waters Playground is located opposite the library in Ellenbrook. It is an award-winning free to use water park and was one of the first water parks in Perth to use the splash pad surface. The water park incorporates ‘innovative, environmental and sustainable elements, while also providing an attractive and creative playspace’. The water park is closed in the cooler months and re-opens September until May daily from 9.00am – 7.00pm. Ready, set, go! The Harrisdale Skate and Scooter Park is a brilliant spot for children big and small to get active. The Heron Park Estate has created a scooter track, as well as a small skate park, and even basketball/football facilities – so remember to pack a ball too! Fantasy Park at Waikiki is a large accessible park with plenty of play areas for kids to explore, a sensory garden with animal sculptures, a dog friendly park and also the home to Rockingham’s only disc golf course.   It felt like we were walking into a fortress at first. There are two playgrounds located near the entrance, just alongside one another. Both playgrounds have ramps, which make them accessible and toddler-friendly. Harold Boas Gardens, a lush inner city park, is dappled in sunlight. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic, with lots of shade and park benches. And there’s a playground there too! The tranquil gardens feature small lakes, waterfalls and streams, so keep an eye on toddlers – they will enjoy watch the ducks waddle around. Close to the cafe strip in Mount Lawley, we discovered a lush, green park with a shaded playground, lawn to run on and paths to ride a bike or scooter. The play equipment here includes a traditional playground with various climbing ladders, a fireman pole, a chain bridge for balancing, a twisty slide, monkey bars and a flying fox.
