What is great about non-sand playgrounds?
Not all kids love sand, just as not all parents and carers may not love it either. Sometimes it’s a sensory preference. Sometimes it’s that you don’t want your toddler constantly trying to eat the sand. And sometimes it’s just that you don’t want to feel like you’re cleaning half a sandpit out of your car or your kids shoes. 😛
In addition, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug! 😉

Previously known as Orange Grove Community Reserve, Boyle Lane All Abilities Playground is the NEWest playground that has received a $242,000 upgrade from the City of Gosnells in Orange Grove. Located at the intersection of Boyle Lane and Maddington Road, this fully fenced inclusive play space might be on the smaller scale, but it has all the sensory play elements and equipment for kids of all ages to enjoy and makes a good pit-stop to let the kids loose when you are around the area. Located in the heart of the new community at Mandogalup, Florence Estate Park is the new playground that beautifully incorporates wooden beams for its play equipment. This spacious playground is nested beside rows of mature trees, providing scenic greenery, and playing in the park feels like you’re right next to nature. My girls headed straight to the main play area, where the big slide is. The tall climbing structure consists of different climbing wall panels for the kids to climb onto. Opened in 2020, this great park in Australind makes a great stopover on the way down south. It takes its name from the local Wardandi Noongar language. Karragarup means “place of crabs”, as the bay the park sits on is well known for it’s blue swimmer crab population. Just off Ocean Reef Road, there’s a fantastic playground found at Edgewater Park in Edgewater! There’s many fun elements to this playground including a traditional play structure and a little nature play too. And good news if you’ve just cleaned your car… there’s no sand! Found next to the Edgewater Shopping Centre, there’s plenty of parking and facilities here. The IGA makes it handy to grab a drink or snack to enjoy in the park. Mardalup Playground is a popular location in East Perth for family picnics as it’s right on the banks of the Swan River, opposite Optus Stadium. Mardalup is a Nyungar term meaning ‘place of small marsupial’. The playground is on a soft fall surfaces, making it great for toddlers and kids of all ages, though with the river being so close, be mindful of toddlers playing in the area. The Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space is an amazing park purpose built for all ages and abilities. Carefully built around and under existing trees, covering 10,000sq m with wheelchair access throughout, a sensory garden, flying fox, climbing obstacles, slides, swings, picnic areas, water play, toilet facilities and fully fenced… it certainly ticks all the boxes!!! Just outside of Mandurah, tucked away in suburbia is Meadow Springs Quarry Adventure Park. Its size is deceiving from the road, with a lush green grassed area and playground visible, however, it extends back and down into the quarry. The first playground you come across is a traditional style one, with a lovely big spider net swing, fun stepping stones, slides, stairs, climbing challenges and some rockers. Lincoln Road Reserve in Forrestfield has had a recent upgrade adding nature play, ninja course and double flying fox to the existing play equipment. The double flying fox has a seat with a harness and the disc-style. The flying fox is quite long and as always we spent quite a bit of time on here. The play equipment has monkey bars, a small platform and a slide but after a few turns on the monkey bar, it was the ninja obstacles and flying fox that kept my daughter occupied. Jubilee Reserve, Eden Hill Jubilee Reserve is a multi-use reserve with a great playground located in Eden Hill. With play equipment suitable for toddlers to tweens, this shaded, sand-free playground is sure to be a hit. On arrival, Miss 4.5 bolted straight for the climbing ropes. A large arched climbing structure with rope ladders, a climbing wall and rubbery platforms with a huge winner with my Miss and a 7 year old girl. Pioneer Park is an unusual playspace situated next to the Canning River in Gosnells. The playground is below street level and you enter via a ‘tree top’ long walkway which is pram friendly and great fun for scooting down. The Canning River runs next to the playground but it is well fenced off so there is no danger of little people getting close to the water whilst your back is turned. This brand new nature adventure playground is located right next to the Coolbellup Skate Park just behind the Coolbellup Public Library. It is a fabulous play space that has been built around the huge existing trees, which provide shade to a large majority of the playground throughout the day. Sometimes small parks deliver a big play and this is the case at Copley Reserve Belmont. We recently stumbled across this small park which is located near the shops on Kooyong Rd Belmont. Copley Reserve Belmont is very much part of the community as the park has a small community garden at the edge and the pathways lead through housing to further grassed areas and benches. While it’s much smaller than the estate’s “Giant Park”, the simple Ridge Hill Green Nature Playground can provide plenty of entertainment for children that love to be in the great outdoors and love to climb. Bina Parkland, Balga Bina Parkland is the latest playground in Balga. Built within Princess Wallington Reserve, Stage 1 of the new play area includes traditional equipment, nature play and a flying fox! Bina Parkland is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages! Brabham has recently added a new park to Ariella estate, Ariella Adventure Park, and it’s absolutely delightful. The park features an awesome dragonfly play structure which consists of two rope climbing frames and one giant slide. The kids loved climbing up high at the top of the frame then walking along, before doing their best speed down the slide! It kept them entertained for ages! The Scramble, located at Omodeo Vista, Hammond Park, features a variety of parkour-style climbing equipment for your ultimate parkour challenge! Burswood Park is located on the river near the Crown Hotel complex. You access it from Glenn Place and there is parking provided. If the small parking area near the park is full, there is other parking available within easy walking distance. It is a lovely park with manicured gardens, lots of open space and great views. The playground is fully fenced and has good shade cover from the beautiful old tree in the middle of the playground and the surrounding trees. After over four years in the making, the 9 million dollar redevelopment of Shirley Strickland Reserve is complete! The dog-friendly sporting reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art Sport and Community Pavilion, a fantastic nature playground, fitness equipment and cycle/walking paths. The main feature of the playground is the enormous wooden multilevel climbing structure with a bright lime green slide. If you’ve ducked into Woolies at the Banksia Grove Shopping Centre recently, you’ll have probably noticed a new play area near the entrance. The bright and colourful play space has something to amuse most kids. The first thing we noticed was the slide. The ladder for this is built inside what looks like colourful metal crates. Dazzle Park is a vibrant and colourful playground located at lluma Estate in Bennett springs. This unusual playground is situated within a hedge maze which we are sure will provide lots of extra fun once it matures. This playground is definitely one for the kids not afraid of heights. Wow! If your kids are into riding bikes – whatever age they are, John Dunn Challenge Park in Kelmscott is amazing. There are four bike tracks, plus a trainer track, mini track, intermediate track and advanced track – meaning there is a level to suit everyone here. As of autumn 2022, Coventry Village in Morley now has a fenced outdoor playground. In addition to the existing indoor playground, this is located close to cafes and restaurants. Claughton Reserve, Bayswater Claughton Reserve, Bayswater, is a picturesque park located by the Swan River. This play space features a nature play area that kids of all ages will love.
