John MacMillan Park next to the library in Victoria Park has just reopened with a brand new nature playground, basketball courts, open grass and more. The new equipment has been designed around the lovely trees giving it a nice combination of natural shade and shade sails. There are toilets conveniently located behind the basketball area.
A feature of the area is the art piece “Portal” which mists and at night it also lights up. The mist is activated automatically and the kids loved running in and out of it.
The area now has a basketball hoop, ping pong table and markings on the ground to play games. There is a large expanse of grass perfect for running, ball games or having a picnic.
The playground area itself is well set out into little areas with pathways throughout. The park features mostly wooden structures and has benches and seats located near the play areas. There is also a little library in the park.
The first area we noticed were the two large chalkboards and mud kitchen type area. This is on soft fall base whereas most of the rest of the equipment is on wood chips. When we visited there was plenty of chalk available for both boards.
There is a little climbing structure with a cargo net and a double slide. The park has a toddler swing and a birds nest swing. A wooden teepee and coloured totem type sticks were another different feature of the park. There is quite a number of stepping logs which always entertains my daughter for a while.
We visited after shopping at Park Centre but as the park is conveniently located next to both the library and shops you could combine a play with a visit to either. The Park Centre has a few coffee options and our favourite ice cream shop for a takeaway or sitdown after a play. The Vic Park markets are also held in the park on Sundays. There is plenty of parking close to the park.
