Why not be Sun Smart? Perth can have some extreme temperatures, and experiences high UV rating regularly. In addition to sun hats and sunscreen, shaded parks protect delicate childhood skin on hot or high UV days. Parks with natural shade or shade sails are perfect for keeping children safer in these conditions.

The 5 million dollar foreshore playground features an 8.5 metre tall lighthouse with twisting tunnel slides, a ship play structure, sand play, a rope maze, and basketball court – the kids will never want to go home! Sienna Wood’s Explorer Park is a multi-use space suitable for all ages, interests and abilities. The main feature of the playground is the ‘Tree of Life’, which is an 8m high climbing structure with tunnel slides. The climb to the first slide is just stairs, making it easy for little explorers to navigate. Reaching the bigger slide involves climbing ropes so it a little trickier for younger children. The beautiful Lake Jualbup playground is located in the leafy suburb of Shenton Park, and is surrounded by a lovely well-kept park with rolling green lawns. “Jualbup” is an aboriginal term meaning ‘a place where water rises in the season of spring’. The lake can dry up during the summer months, but when we visited it was full and had a variety of pretty birdlife including Black Swans and assorted ducks. Weeip Park is a NEW (Sept 2021) public open space in Midland that’s perfect for the whole family. It’s got everything from a nature playground to climbing equipment, and it’s all yours to explore! Lawler Park is a green, leafy park in Floreat with a playground suitable for toddlers and upwards. There are lots of play opportunities here to keep the kids busy. The larger playground structure includes two slides of different sizes, ring-shaped monkey bars, swinging platforms to climb across, some climbing ropes, and a tricky balancing beam with vertical bars to up the difficulty level. Garvey Park is a great local park just at the end of Fauntleroy Avenue on the river’s edge in Ascot. The kids love the playground as it has something to suit both my sensible 5 year old and my adventurous almost 3 year old! The play equipment is all on sand with a large sail shade over most of the equipment which is great in the warmer months. Leafy Somerly Park in the northern suburb of Clarkson features a bright playground suitable for kids of all ages, including traditional play equipment mixed with some sensory play. On arriving and walking down the path and under a tall gazebo to the playground, the first things to grab Miss 4’s attention was the musical play equipment. Located on the beautiful South Perth foreshore is Hurlingham Rd Park a playground designed for able bodied and less able bodied children. The main play structure can be accessed by a wheelchair ramp. Rickman Delawney Reserve, Balcatta The playground at Rickman Delawney Reserve in the leafy suburb of Balcatta has recently undergone an upgrade. Gone is the dated old playground, and in it’s place stands a new climbing structure with a huge slide, toddler equipment and lots more! The whole family will enjoy this new play area. Located in the heart of the new community at Mandogalup, Florence Estate Park is the new playground that beautifully incorporates wooden beams for its play equipment. This spacious playground is nested beside rows of mature trees, providing scenic greenery, and playing in the park feels like you’re right next to nature. Carine Open Space is one of our local and favourite parks to head to on the weekend as there are oodles to do and see. We usually spend a few hours there if it’s nice weather and take the kids scooters/bikes and the dog. This is a big favourite for dog walkers on the weekend and they sometimes have organised sporting comps on at the weekend so it can get busy at peak times. Mardalup Playground is a popular location in East Perth for family picnics as it’s right on the banks of the Swan River, opposite Optus Stadium. Mardalup is a Nyungar term meaning ‘place of small marsupial’. The playground is on a soft fall surfaces, making it great for toddlers and kids of all ages, though with the river being so close, be mindful of toddlers playing in the area. My kids and I visit a lot of playgrounds… but the brand new Wandi Playing Fields Playground is hands down our favourite playground in Perth (big call right!) – while there is no crazy slide or huge tower, there is lots of different play areas and something for kids of all ages and abilities! Langley Park Playground is an ideal playground if you’re visiting the city on a family day trip as it’s conveniently located in East Perth. The playground is suitable for kids age 3yrs plus (despite the sign saying 4yrs) and there are toilets directly next to the park. The park is covered with shade sails and is partially fenced. Ashfield Reserve Play Space Ashfield Reserve Play Space in Perth’s eastern suburbs is a hidden gem. Sharing the parkland with Ashfield Oval, this spot has something for all ages. Germano Park is a peaceful, leafy park with a playground to suit most kids located in Wanneroo. If your kids love to climb, they’ll love this park. What struck me first when we arrived at Germano Park was how quiet and green it was. The park is full of trees and soft birdsong. The playground area is covered by shade sails with a sand base. This features climbing rope equipment in the form of a rope tunnel, a rope ladder, and ropes with plastic platforms to balance across. Gibbon Park, Mosman Park Gibbon Park is the latest nature playground in Mosman Park. This park includes a mix of nature play elements and traditional play equipment that’s sure to satisfy active children! On arriving Miss 6 raced straight for the traditional play equipment first. This is a disability friendly playground for both able and less able bodied children. The play structure can be access by a wheelchair friendly ramp and features throughout the structure. Children with good upper body strength can use the various bars to pull themselves up onto the playframe or guide themselves down. Fontana Park is a brand new (April 2022) little park is hidden away in Trinity Estate, Alkimos. Whilst not big, it kept my 3 children busy for easily over an hour. There is a huge log swing which they loved and lots of room for everyone! The rock climbing wall was popular with my younger 2 children, which takes you up to the epic slide! Just around the corner from the Alexander Heights IGA, is Lemongrass Park, a lovely shaded playground with traditional equipment and some nature play elements. One of the main features that caught our eye was the rope equipment. The curved slide has a rope web to climb up instead of stairs, and there are various rope webs or swinging ropes with a balancing rope below to cross. Miss 3 enjoyed having a go on all of these. The Scented Gardens are found Sir James Mitchell Park, about half way between the Mends Street Jetty and Coode Street Jetty. Rossiter Pavilion and Playing Fields in Piara Waters, in the Holland Park Estate, boasts a small playground packed with natureplay and adventure for curious, energetic kids. The first part to grab Miss 4’s attention was the three in-ground trampolines in the middle of the playground. While we were all locked out of playgrounds due to COVID-19, Floreat Beach Playspace had a total makeover! The focal point of the playground is the ‘Kraken’, a cephalopod-like sea monster which I think looks a little like a blue-ringed octopus! The wooden climbing structure features climbing obstacles and slide. You can also hide in the belly of the beast. Britannia Reserve Pump Track Britannia Reserve Pump Track is a 1.2km pump track and nature bike trail in Leederville. Close to the city, it’s a great spot to take active kids of all ages out riding. Britannia Reserve Pump Track was originally installed as part of a Pop-Up Play initiative in April 2019. It has quickly become a permanent fixture. Britannia Reserve is one of City of Vincent’s largest open parklands. The pump track was created using natural materials. Just North of the river, nestled within the shade trees, is a nature park like no other! The Russell Brown Adventure Park in Mosman Park is located in Minim Cove, on the bank of the Swan River, just beyond the Mosman Park Tennis Club. Rusell Brown adventure park blends in well with the bushland, and you would hardly even know it was there. It’s well hidden in the bush with natural structures to climb on that are mostly made of wood, stone, and ropes.
