Why visit a playground or park with shade?
Why not be Sun Smart? Perth can have some extreme temperatures, and experiences high UV rating regularly. In addition to sun hats and sunscreen, shaded parks protect delicate childhood skin on hot or high UV days. Parks with natural shade or shade sails are perfect for keeping children safer in these conditions.
In addition, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug!

While Colour Block Park (The LEGO Park) may not be overly big, it definitely has the WOW factor! The main feature is a climbing structure made up of large brightly coloured building blocks. Children can either climb the blocks to the top and walk across the rope bridge or climb the ladder to reach the top of the tunnel slide that is surprisingly steep and fast – my 5 year old nephew loved it! On a recent road trip, we took a detour through Northam, the detour was originally to check out the Northam Suspension Bridge, which is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Australia. After crossing the bridge, which was well worth the visit (until the kids thought it was fun to make it sway), we discovered Bernard Park which features two fully fenced play areas, a water playground, sculptures, amphitheatre, picnic and BBQ facilities and public toilets. John MacMillan Park next to the library in Victoria Park has just reopened with a brand new nature playground, basketball courts, open grass and more. The new equipment has been designed around the lovely trees giving it a nice combination of natural shade and shade sails. There are toilets conveniently located behind the basketball area. The infamous pirate ship playground at Heathcote Reserve in Applecross is probably one of the first few ‘super playgrounds’ in Perth. I must say this playground is also one of the most picturesque playgrounds in Perth, offering a panoramic view of Perth city and surroundings. Gingin is a small and quaint township with a mighty new playground that is jam-packed with features and caters for children of all ages! The playground is nature-based, one of the main features is the Gingin Tower which includes two slides, a rope ladder and bridge. Other nature-based elements include stepping stumps and logs. The City of Gosnells has unveiled its latest inclusive play space at Sutherlands Park in Huntingdale. While the Wanneroo skate park has been established for a long time a children’s playground is a more recent addition. The park sits within the confines of the showgrounds, meaning it is secure for little runaways! I’m not sure if the playground colours of green and purple are a nod to the 1970’s Wanneroo Primary School colours, or just a happy accident, either way, it is a fun combo. South Beach playground in South Fremantle is perfect for pirate lovers! It’s a boat themed playground complete with a large climbing area, a double slide and a set of swings. Then you have to bring them down to Radiata Park at Aubin Grove to give them a taste of the ninja warrior-style obstacle course! I’ve recently rediscovered Woodbridge Riverside Park and I think it’s great! It’s located on the river in Woodbridge, near Guildford. This is a fully fenced park with safety latch gates at the main entrance. Although it’s not that close to us I’ve found it worth the drive as Miss 3 and friends have loved it each time we’ve been. There are so many play areas to explore, sand, nature and water play, slides, flying fox, tunnels, swings and a large expanse of green grass. Just a short 5 minute walk from Ngarkal Beach and the Port Coogee water park in the new Parkside Retreat estate, you will find this lovely local playground. The slide is attached to an up-ended sea container that has 2 ways of climbing to the top. You can go around to the back and climb the outside to the door. Partridge Way Reserve in Thornlie boasts some excellent equipment. This park is suited to kids aged 3 and up as the climbing frames are quite large. There is an obstacle course for older kids to try out their strength and coordination. If you like to play sports then there is a basketball hoop, cricket pitch and plenty of lawn area to set up on. William Henry Oval Caversham is situated nearby to Caversham Community Centre, and close to Suffolk Street before Colorino Avenue. The oval itself hosts a lot of community sports and also has two playgrounds that are worth a visit. Situated close by to Subiaco Train Station and Domain Stadium is the pretty and peaceful Market Square Park. We discovered the park after a visit to a nearby cafe, and Miss almost 3 loved it! It was quiet and leafy, full of birdsong with the sound of the occasional train going by. Set in the heart of beautiful Perth Hills spot, Roleystone, Borrello Park has something for kids of all ages. Recently, the play area at the much-loved park was replaced. This park is only 15 minutes’ drive from Armadale town center, and yet it feels like you’ve travelled hours down south. It’s close to Araluen Botanic Park too. Harbour View Park is a partially fenced toddler friendly playground in Hillarys. The playground consists of a boat inspired climbing frame, with small ladders, a rock climbing wall, enclosed slide, steering wheel and speaking tube. The rubber softfall flooring is perfect for my toddler who is a sand eater. Other equipment includes two white rocking horses, and a set of swings, with one toddler swing and one normal swing. A brand new play space has just opened up at Centenary Park in Belmont and it’s so good! Designed for younger kids, the playground is fully fenced with a mixture of soft fall and sand. The new Tomato Lake all-abilities playground has opened and it appears to be a big hit as it was very busy when we visited. The playground is in front between the cafe and the bbq picnic area. Rotary Park in Wanneroo is one of our favourite playgrounds, the park originally opened in 1979 since then the space has undergone major developments and has been really well cared for by the City of Wanneroo. We especially love the diverse range of equipment and different play opportunity for kids of all ages. Robinson Reserve, Tuart Hill As of July 2019, Robinson Reserve in Tuart Hill has a new playground. Covered by shade sails, this play area is full of fun for kids from tots to teens. Cantwell Park in Pinjarra is a brilliant stop on a road trip to WA’s south west. The massive park is right in the heart of the town, on the banks of the Murray River. We usually grab some freshly baked treats from the yummy Pinjarra Bakery and eat them at the park. You may have passed Cantwell Park and not noticed, as you drove over the South West Highway bridge. Wow, wow, wow! Shipwreck Cove park in Golden Bay, has totally nailed it! What a fantastic family space and visually it looks stunning! A beautiful green parkland along Golden Bay foreshore, right next to the Indian Ocean. This fantastic playground & recreation space can be found in the new Mojo Urban Living estate in Cockburn Central. The playground is a great mix of nature play amongst traditional equipment with a combination of soft fall, sand and wood chip ground cover. Banks Reserve is located in Mouth Lawley on the banks of the Swan River, the play space is bearly recognisable after an extensive redevelopment. The new nature-based playground has been cleverly designed around the huge preexisting trees which offer plenty of shade! As a mum of a busy 2-year-old toddler, I couldn’t be more thrilled with Joondalup Square playground, located opposite the gigantic Bunnings Warehouse. As an added bonus, the well thought out open-air play area is surrounded by eateries! Joondalup Square playground is shaded by two shade sails and is fully fenced and gated. Calleya Playground is an awesome playground located in Stocklands Calleya Estate in Banjup. There are 2 slides, including a very high twisty one for the brave and a smaller hill slide. A highlight of Calleya Playground is the 2 in-ground trampolines, they are very popular with kids of all ages and not something that you normally come across in a playground. It has 2 sets of swings. Coogee Beach Playground – it’s been many years since I visited Coogee Beach. Thankfully not much has changed. The beautiful lush grass strip is still there and is perfect for a game of cricket or dusting off the old frisbee or kicking the ball around. My daughter thought it was her racing track and proceeded to show off her running skills to who ever was interested. Promenade Park is tucked amongst apartment buildings in Burswood. It has recently been updated with new playground equipment. We stopped by for a play recently and found it had a lot of different activities to keep little ones occupied. There were a number of board activities such as a word search, ball maze and line up 4 which added extra interaction and different activities to the usual playground equipment. This shipwreck-themed playground which opened in March 2018 is one of twenty parks planned within the in the thriving Yanchep Golf Estate! Perfect for toddlers and kids under 10, it certainly ticks a lot of boxes, and this is only stage one of the two-hectare park. If you’re looking for a peaceful playground surrounded by trees and birds singing, then playground at Ian Robbins Park is for you. Situated at the centre of the park is a great playground, which has recently been upgraded with new equipment and fresh white sand. Frye Park or Pirate Park in Kelmscott is a great park which features a large pirate ship but also has a fenced toddler playground and picnic tables in the same area. The toddler area and picnic tables are covered with shade sails in summer. The pirate ship has plenty to do with three slides, climbing challenges and treasure hunts.
