What is great about non-sand playgrounds?
Not all kids love sand, just as not all parents and carers may not love it either. Sometimes it’s a sensory preference. Sometimes it’s that you don’t want your toddler constantly trying to eat the sand. And sometimes it’s just that you don’t want to feel like you’re cleaning half a sandpit out of your car or your kids shoes. 😛
In addition, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug! 😉

Seldon Street Playground is located in a small park on Eton Street, North Perth. The street is fairly quiet, with plenty of roadside parking available. The playground area is fenced with two Maglock gates, and the equipment is surrounded by rubbery softfall. Leafy Somerly Park in the northern suburb of Clarkson features a bright playground suitable for kids of all ages, including traditional play equipment mixed with some sensory play. On arriving and walking down the path and under a tall gazebo to the playground, the first things to grab Miss 4’s attention was the musical play equipment. Fontana Park is a brand new (April 2022) little park is hidden away in Trinity Estate, Alkimos. Whilst not big, it kept my 3 children busy for easily over an hour. There is a huge log swing which they loved and lots of room for everyone! The rock climbing wall was popular with my younger 2 children, which takes you up to the epic slide! Located across from the WA Museum Boola Bardip is the Perth Cultural Centre Playspace, a quirky little play space which has a heavy focus on sensory play. The Playspace is fully fenced and gated and it is open daily from 8am – 7pm. It is recommended that the playspace is suitable most for children aged 6 – 13 years but children under that age can get a lot out of it too. Around the corner from the well-known Jungle Park in the Swan Valley, a brand-new park has been constructed and is now open for play. The 1.4 hectare Honeycomb park, located in Peet’s Brabham Estate, features a bee theme and 6-metre ‘honeycomb’ play structure What a great park! Let your little ninjas run free at the new ninja parkour course located inside Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub. This course is the first of its kind in WA and the largest in Australia. Promenade Park is tucked amongst apartment buildings in Burswood. It has recently been updated with new playground equipment. We stopped by for a play recently and found it had a lot of different activities to keep little ones occupied. There were a number of board activities such as a word search, ball maze and line up 4 which added extra interaction and different activities to the usual playground equipment. The popular Mills Park facility has recently opened a new all-abilities playground near the bbqs and grassed area. This new edition to the existing Mills Park Playspace and Skate Plaza is fully fenced and double gated which is also great for younger children. A good amount of the enclosed playground area is covered by shade sails and there are also a few seating options for parents too. The City of Gosnells has unveiled its latest inclusive play space at Sutherlands Park in Huntingdale. This exciting development marks the first completed project of the Sutherlands Park Master Plan, with a Youth Entertainment Space still to come. Ashfield Reserve Play Space Ashfield Reserve Play Space in Perth’s eastern suburbs is a hidden gem. Sharing the parkland with Ashfield Oval, this spot has something for all ages. We dropped in for a play during school holidays to burn off some energy. This was a great spot for it, too! Miss 5 enjoyed that there is lots to climb at Ashfield Reserve Play Space. John MacMillan Park next to the library in Victoria Park has just reopened with a brand new nature playground, basketball courts, open grass and more. The new equipment has been designed around the lovely trees giving it a nice combination of natural shade and shade sails. There are toilets conveniently located behind the basketball area. A feature of the area is the art piece “Portal” which mists and at night it also lights up. The mist is activated automatically and the kids loved running in and out of it. Situated within the Allura Estate in Eglinton, in the northern suburbs, is Kinkuna Adventure Playground. This large playground with a mix of nature play, water play and traditional play equipment has something for everyone to enjoy. Kinkuna Adventure Playground features a series of big wooden towers interconnected with ladders, climbing ropes, a tunnel and a rope bridge. There are two slides of different sizes. After over four years in the making, the 9 million dollar redevelopment of Shirley Strickland Reserve is complete! The dog-friendly sporting reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art Sport and Community Pavilion, a fantastic nature playground, fitness equipment and cycle/walking paths. The main feature of the playground is the enormous wooden multilevel climbing structure with a bright lime green slide. Previously known as Orange Grove Community Reserve, Boyle Lane All Abilities Playground is the NEWest playground that has received a $242,000 upgrade from the City of Gosnells in Orange Grove. Located at the intersection of Boyle Lane and Maddington Road, this fully fenced inclusive play space might be on the smaller scale, but it has all the sensory play elements and equipment for kids of all ages to enjoy and makes a good pit-stop to let the kids loose when you are around the area. Burswood Park is located on the river near the Crown Hotel complex. You access it from Glenn Place and there is parking provided. If the small parking area near the park is full, there is other parking available within easy walking distance. It is a lovely park with manicured gardens, lots of open space and great views. The playground is fully fenced and has good shade cover from the beautiful old tree in the middle of the playground and the surrounding trees. Willespie Park is a great little playground located in Pearsall, the playground isn’t fenced but is situated away from any roads. Willespie Park includes a good sized playground with equipment to suit a range of children. Unfortunately, the playground isn’t shaded so bring along sunscreen and a hat. The Fremantle Esplanade Playground and surrounding space cater for all ages. It is situated on Marine Terrace, opposite the Esplanade Hotel. The playground is surrounded by huge Norfolk Island Pines and green grass making it a great spot for a picnic. Lake Leschenaultia, found close to Mundaring, is a top day out in the Perth Hills for families. There’s swimming, bike riding, bushwalking, picnicking and now there’s even more reason to visit. Lincoln Road Reserve in Forrestfield has had a recent upgrade adding nature play, ninja course and double flying fox to the existing play equipment. The double flying fox has a seat with a harness and the disc-style. The flying fox is quite long and as always we spent quite a bit of time on here. The play equipment has monkey bars, a small platform and a slide but after a few turns on the monkey bar, it was the ninja obstacles and flying fox that kept my daughter occupied. Harbour View Park is a partially fenced toddler friendly playground in Hillarys. The playground consists of a boat inspired climbing frame, with small ladders, a rock climbing wall, enclosed slide, steering wheel and speaking tube. The rubber softfall flooring is perfect for my toddler who is a sand eater. Other equipment includes two white rocking horses, and a set of swings, with one toddler swing and one normal swing. Maylands Waterland is WA’s premier outdoor water playground, beautifully situated on the Maylands Peninsula overlooking the Swan River. Stretton Way Reserve, situated behind Kenwick Village and is one of the shadiest parks I have seen. Shade sails cover the climbing equipment as well as the BBQ area making it good for summer outings. The play equipment has an excellent variety of play equipment including three slides, monkey bars, balancing equipment, various levels of climbing structures, and a basketball hoop. The Eden Beach Lookout and Playspace is a brand new section of Eden Beach estate in Jindalee has just opened (Dec 2021) and it’s great for the older kids! Featuring a basketball court, rock climbing wall, parkour, skate/scooter ramps and a huge grassy area it’s a beautiful spot to spend a few hours. My kids loved the parkour, and the scooter ramps were a huge hit. There’s a few shaded picnic bench areas and also a bbq as well. The much awaited Akimos Beach Fitness Park is now open! If you are into fitness, then this park has it all. It features a “ freeletics “ area where you train with your own body weight, and also an area to practice parkour ( Miss 7 loved this ).
