This year the 2023 Australia Day celebrations have been scaled down from the massive show that we all know and love to a drone show and much smaller fireworks display.
The City of Lights Show, renamed for 2023 Australia Day, will take place from 8.15pm – 8.45pm at Langley Park Perth. The smaller scale show, means that it will not be visible from many of the favourite places, listed below, that people have previously enjoyed watching the fireworks from – including the South Perth foreshore.
This year drone show and fireworks show is set to special narration and sound effects that can only be heard from Langely Park, meaning that it is not possible to fully enjoy the show from anywhere else in the city, including Kings Park.

RIGHT IN THE ACTION
Langley Park, Perth City
To soak up all the festivities Langley Park is one of the best places to view the fireworks from, as well as there being plenty of fun things to do in the hours leading up to the sky show. The free Lotterywest Entertainment Zone on Langley Park is open from 3pm. Find out more here.

The South Perth foreshore at Sir James Mitchell Park is a brilliant spot to watch the fabulous fireworks, with the glittering city skyline as a beautiful backdrop.
Kings Park
The elevated position on the lush lawns of Kings Park is a beautiful spot to watch the fireworks from.
Elizabeth Quay
There are a few grassy spots around the Quay you can sit and enjoy the fireworks from. It’s also the perfect position to be close to public transport links, to make a quick exit by bus, train or ferry, once the fireworks are over. Read the Buggybuddys guide to Elizabeth Quay here.
ON THE OUTSKIRTS
If you choose to avoid the crowds, you can still see most of the fireworks (though the lower displays may be obscured by buildings etc). Here’s out round up of some spots that the whole family can enjoy:
Places to watch the Fireworks South of the River
Chevron Parklands, Burswood
All along the river there is plenty of space to set up a spot to watch the fireworks from. It’s a little “around the corner” from the main action on the Swan River, but you’re sure to see the large fireworks up high in the sky! Heathcoate Reserve, Applecross
This is a wonderful place for a family BBQ or picnic, while the kids play on the huge pirate ship! Once the sun goes down, you’ll have a great view of the fireworks across the river. Read the Buggybuddys review here.
Deep Water Point, Mt Pleasant
Throw down a picnic rug on the grassy banks of the river at Deep Water Point. It’s a popular spot, but far quieter than heading right into the city. Read the Buggybuddys review here.
Places to watch the Fireworks North of the River
Matilda Bay, Crawley
Close to UWA, the banks of the Swan River at Matilda Bay offer close views of the fireworks, as well as a lovely spot for a family picnic and paddle.
Lake Monger, Wembley
The north end of the lake, near to Lake Monger Primary School is a great spot to watch fireworks across the lake. Another vantage point is from the hill near Gregory Street. Read the Buggybuddys review here.
Birdwood Square, North Perth
This little inner city park on Beaufort Street has a view of many of the large fireworks, without having to drive right into the city. A playground will keep kids entertained before the show begins!
Places to Watch the Fireworks from Further Afield
Bardon Park, Maylands

Point Walter, Bicton

Lions Lookout, Lesmurdie
If you don’t want to “drive down the hill” this lookout spot on the escarpment near Welshpool Rd East offers sweeping views to the city. Tip – take binoculars for a better view.

This article might have been useful in the past but from 2023 onwards they have canned the usual Australia Day fireworks over the Swan River. Instead they’re doing a much smaller display at Langley Park. I don’t know if you’ll still be able to see the Langley Park fireworks at all of these spots…
There is no fireworks this year from what I’m reading. Just some lazer show which can only been seen from one location.
