Take a trip back 100 years in time at Kalamunda History Village, in the Perth Hills. I took my seven year oldย โ€œLittle Chefโ€, along with his grandparents, to the open air museum which is located right in the centre of Kalamundaย town.ย It is the largest museumย of its kindย in Western Australiaย and gives you aย uniqueย taste ofย whatย hills lifeย was likeย a century ago.

We paid a very reasonable admission fee at theย Zig Zag Culturalย and Tourist Informationย Centreย next door.ย For the four of us it only cost $20.ย Atย the History Village you can explore a number ofย originalย buildings, vehiclesย and machines from a time before no TVs, no smart phones, noย computers and NO running water! Life was definitely a lot harder back then.

Manyย of theย original buildings were relocated to thisย site of theย formerย Upper Darling Range Railway Stationย from the Kalamunda areaย in the 1970s.ย Thereโ€™s so much to look atย –ย Little Chef didnโ€™t know where to start!ย The Train Stationย (1903-1927)ย wasย built to service the Zig Zag line.ย

Siting proudly at the platform is aย Locomotive G118.โ€ฏThis steam train was the type used on the Kalamunda line,ย transportingย timber from Canning Mills to the Midland Junction, via theย Zig Zag. Kids can hop aboard and play at being the engine driver!ย

At the Kalamunda Stateย School Houseย (1905-1970), children will be fascinated to see how a class room was set up in the last century and they can sit at one of theย oldย wooden desks.

During holidays old fashioned school lessons are held here, in what is a popular school holiday program.ย Here kids can discover old school yard games like elastics, hopscotch,ย skipping, hand clapping and all the fun rhymes that go along with them.

At the school house there is also a room with a collection of artefacts. Little Chef particularly was interested in the toys of the time, including billy carts, a very old monopoly set, wooden toys and more. Thereโ€™s even a beautiful giant dolls house, decked out with lots of furniture and dolls, which is a favourite with children.ย

McCullaghย Cottageย (1895)โ€ฏisย aย tinyย settler’s cottageย that you can walk through โ€“ itโ€™s like walking through somebodyโ€™s house!

Itย was home to three generations of theย McCullaghย family, who were early settlers in the area. Itโ€™sย set up with the furniture and bits and bobs from that era. And it wouldnโ€™t be complete without an outside laundry with a copper and mangle and aย dunny withย a spider andย newspaper loo paper!

Walking throughย Chamber’s Houseย (1922)ย youโ€™ll notice itโ€™s a little bit fancier than the cottage. Itย depicts a typicalย pre-Worldย War IIย home.ย Thereโ€™sย a well equipped kitchen and the posh dining room is set up.

In theย Carriage Shedย youโ€™ll find pre motor carย transportation vehiclesย including horse drawn carriages and a milk cart.ย There are also vintage trucks, busses and Little Chefย enjoyed sitting in the driverโ€™s seat of a big old red fire truck!

The village is run by volunteers and we were treated to a demo from an 80 year old fruit grading machine in theย Orchard Shed.ย It was a huge contraption andย Little Chefย absolutely loved piling in the (fake) fruit, which got taken up the conveyor belt, cleaned and then sorted into size. The shedย showcasesย the development of the orchard industry in the district, which is still very important to this day.

Theย first officialย Kalamunda Post Officeย (1921-1972)ย houses displays on postal, telegraph and telephone services.ย

Youโ€™ll also find the areaโ€™s originalย Post Officeย (1901-1921) which now serves as the villageโ€™sย Generalย Store.ย ย Thereโ€™s also a blacksmiths,ย timberย sawpit andย muchย moreย to discover.ย

A visit to the Kalamunda History Village isย a fantastic insightย for children into a bygone time. For us, it wasย particularly specialย as we visited with my parents.ย Manyย Grandparentsย enjoyย a trip down memory lane, passing on memories to their grandkidsย andย rememberingย what it was like before the digital and TV age.ย Kalamunda History Village isย well worth a visit!ย

Kalamunda History Village is open Mon-Wed & Fri 10am-3pm; Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm. Closed Thursdays.โ€ฏ

  1. […] The town of Kalamunda is a gem, full of cafes, gift shops, childrenโ€™s boutiques, and traditional lolly shops. Take a walk to the gumnut fountain or have a play at Stirk Park. At the top of the main street, youโ€™ll find the Zig Zag Cultural centre (next to Kalamunda Library). Here thereโ€™s an information centre, which is a great place to start if youโ€™re not familiar with the area. Also part of the Zig Zag Cultural Centre is the Kalamunda History Village. The open air museum is the largest museum of its kind in WA and gives you a unique taste of what hills life was like a century ago. Thereโ€™s an old steam train, train station, post office, school, cottages, vehicles and machines. As well as a wealth of information on the timber and fruit picking industries.
