Kids love burning off energy at parks and playgrounds, and Perth’s got some of the best in the world. Best of all, playgrounds are FREE! Why not stop off for a coffee or bite to eat and make a day of it?
Why do we love playgrounds near cafes?
Kids love going wild in at a park. But sometimes parenting is hard or tiring, what with sleepless nights, teething and everything else. Sometimes parents and carers need to exercise self-care. Stopping at a family-friendly coffee shop or restaurant while taking the kids out to a playground can help. Adults can grab a much-needed coffee or bite to eat. Likewise, kids can enjoy a toy corner and very soon cut loose in the park. Everyone wins!
For this reasons, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug!

Let the games begin! If your kids love little athletics they’ll absolutely love Pegasus Park in Bennett Springs!!! Karrinyup Shopping Centre is home to Perth’s newest super playground! The Cubby is a 950sqm play space located at the new West Deck which is part of Karrinyup’s impressive $800 million redevelopment. The main feature is a huge multi-level cubby house – at 16-metres long, 5-metres high, and 5-metres wide, it certainly is the biggest cubby I have ever seen! Stirling Square is a beautiful park in the heart of Guildford, Surrey. Surrounded by classic buildings, this park has much to offer. You can find St Matthews Church built in 1873, Guildford war memorial, a duck pond and a rose garden. The popular Mills Park facility has recently opened a new all-abilities playground near the bbqs and grassed area. This new edition to the existing Mills Park Playspace and Skate Plaza is fully fenced and double gated which is also great for younger children. A good amount of the enclosed playground area is covered by shade sails and there are also a few seating options for parents too. Bayswater Riverside Gardens located along Milne and King William Streets is a fabulous playground to visit with toddlers. Bayswater Riverside Gardens has great age-appropriate play equipment, fully fenced and gated, features rubber soft fall and is covered with shade sails. In the middle of Victoria Park along busy Albany Hwy you will find Read Park. It is a lovely green, shady park situated next to the Victoria Park Community garden. The play equipment has been situated away from the highway and one of the play areas is enclosed with a fence. The area also has toilets, including an accessible toilet, drink fountain, rubbish bins and bench seats. At one time, the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park was the largest free entry playground in Australia. This beloved playground has now reopened (October 2021) with a thoughtful and fun transformation! We were lucky enough to get a look the day before it opened to the public. And it gets a massive tick of approval from us. Located at Pinneroo Point is a playground suitable for younger children. The sand-based playground features a climbing frame with two slides, a rope ladder and monkey bars. There is a super cute Pinnaroo Point play cafe which I am sure will be popular for imaginative play. There are two swings, one of which is high backed. A cubby climbing structure. Occupying a beautiful spot along the banks of the Swan River, Bardon Park in Maylands is a great spot to play! There are two playgrounds located at Bardon Park. The first, closest to the car park, is relatively new and contains some unique play equipment and a focus on nature play. You’ll find a birds nest swing. A net bridge A couple of balancing beams. Coogee Beach Playground – it’s been many years since I visited Coogee Beach. Thankfully not much has changed. The beautiful lush grass strip is still there and is perfect for a game of cricket or dusting off the old frisbee or kicking the ball around. My daughter thought it was her racing track and proceeded to show off her running skills to who ever was interested. Coode St Jetty playground is on the South Perth foreshore. It’s the perfect spot for a family picnic, BBQ or just a play as it’s got parking available has plenty of open space, BBQ facilities, shaded picnic tables, is close to the Boatshed Cafe for lunch or coffee and has toilets nearby. The brand new $1.4 million Lottery-West funded Whale Playground has opened up at Scarborough Beach. The playground is inspired by Noongar culture and features a blue whale skeleton as its main theme. It caters for children of all abilities with elevated wheelchair accessible sand tables and soft fall surfacing with ramps between play spaces. Brampton Park in Butler is nestled next to a manmade lake which has lots of ducks and birds and big rocks amongst some shallow parts of the lake for the kids to climb on (you just need to remind them to be careful as some are slippery as our Mister 5 fell in). After over four years in the making, the 9 million dollar redevelopment of Shirley Strickland Reserve is complete! The dog-friendly sporting reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art Sport and Community Pavilion, a fantastic nature playground, fitness equipment and cycle/walking paths. The main feature of the playground is the enormous wooden multilevel climbing structure with a bright lime green slide. Riverton Jetty playground is located next to the Lo Quay River Cafe in Wilson. Riverton Jetty playground is a nature based playground that features 2 slides, 2 swings, a spinning rope frame, a hammock swing and lots of different balance/walking challenges. The playground is decorated with lots of new plant, animal wood carvings and sand/water flow activities. John Tonkin Reserve is found on the banks of the Swan River in East Fremantle. It’s a lovely spot for a family picnic, with lots of shade from mature trees and picnic shelters. There are BBQs, picnic tables and park benches found in the park. There’s a large boat themed sand fall playground, which is shaded by sails in warmer months. Close to the Peninsula Estate area of Maylands, a new playground has been built at De Lacey Reserve. This playground has something for younger and older kids alike. The first thing Miss 4 spotted was the flying fox. This has a small tower to launch from and sand beneath should someone slip off mid-ride. Miss 4 loved it! It was her favourite part of the playground. We found smaller kids will need help bringing it to the tower as it’s hard work without a bit of muscle. South Beach playground in South Fremantle is perfect for pirate lovers! It’s a boat themed playground complete with a large climbing area, a double slide and a set of swings. Kids will love taking their Pirate play to another level with climbing the mast, walking the plank and firing the cannons. In addition to the two swings there is also a hammock swing. The Swanbourne Beach Foreshore Playground is set in between the beach and The Shorehouse Restaurant. This is a fantastic spot to grab a picnic or BBQ and let the kids run around the grassed area and play in the small pirate themed fenced playground. Did you know that the May Drive Parklands located in Kings Park and Botanic Garden was the very first environmental playground and community area of its kind in Australia? Previously known as the Synergy Parklands, this fun spot with golf course green-worthy lawns, is still a BIG hit with families in Perth. If you’re looking for somewhere near the beach for coffee and a play date, Coogee Beach Playground, with its ship themed play structure, could be just the place for you. The structure itself is mainly wooden with a sand pit base and features a wavy slide and rope ladders. There’s a rope bridge, a telescope and portholes to look through as well as an alphabet and numbers game. Based on the height of the playground, I’d say this one is for kids two and over. Fancote Park is located behind Stargate Shops in Kelmscott. As we drove past the big forte caught our eye so we stopped for a look and a play. The park has wide open grassed spaces for ball games or running around, sand-based playground, exercise equipment and the forte. The park is also equipped with a covered BBQ, picnic tables and benches around the play equipment. There is a drinking fountain near the picnic tables. Located at Mullaloo Beach foreshore closest to the Mullaloo Beach Hotel and Mullaloo lifesaving club, the Mullaloo Beach Pirate playground is sand based with excellent shade coverage. The playground its self consists of a wooden ship and a wooden boat where kids minds can run wild with role-play of being pirates out to sea. The playground is sand fall based and naturally shaded by mature trees, as well as shade sails. The sand is littered with a lot of leaf and sticks, so little ones may prefer to keep their shoes on. Jackadder Lake Playground is a picturesque park just north west of the city. This lovely lakeside spot features a shaded children’s playground, exercise equipment and paths perfect for bikes and scooters. As of the beginning of August 2023, the playground has been refreshed with new climbing equipment, a new and improved juniors area, and new picnic facilities. Miss 9 was excited to check out the new play equipment. Gone is the crumbling soft fall rubber, and in place there is soft white sand. As of autumn 2022, Coventry Village in Morley now has a fenced outdoor playground. In addition to the existing indoor playground, this is located close to cafes and restaurants. If your kids love to climb, then they are sure to love this! The play area is made up predominantly of climbing structures. The base is rubber softfall, so perfect for those of us who dislike sand.
