Wave Rock

Staying at Wave Rock Caravan Park means waking up just metres from one of Western Australiaโ€™s most famous natural landmarks. Set right at the base of Wave Rock, this family-friendly park is a brilliant base for exploring Hyden and the surrounding granite country, with loads of space for kids to roam, play and cool off.

The park has a relaxed bush feel with big skies, plenty of shade trees and generous sites, so you never feel on top of your neighbours. Families can choose from ensuite powered sites, standard powered and unpowered sites, or self-contained cabins if you prefer not to camp. If youโ€™re arriving later in the day, itโ€™s worth planning to get there before sunset as the site numbers can be a little tricky to spot in the dark.

The camp kitchen is compact but well equipped for light campers, with most of what you need to whip up family meals. The industrial-sized sink makes washing dishes easy without juggling hot water at your own site. Beside it is a huge undercover area โ€“ this is really the social hub of the park, with plenty of tables and chairs and a big screen that often has sport playing. Families gather here for breakfast and dinner, especially in hot weather or when itโ€™s windy. If you prefer a quieter start to the day, youโ€™ll also find picnic tables scattered around the campground.

On either side of the main undercover area are BBQ zones with open grassed spaces in front โ€“ perfect for cartwheels, ball games and kids burning off energy while dinner is on the go. Right next to this central area is the Playground, which is a big drawcard for families. The wooden play structure has a bridge, cubby and swings, and being so close to the BBQs and seating means you can keep an eye on the kids while you cook or relax. Itโ€™s also a great spot for children to make new friends.

Sporty kids are well catered for with a cricket pitch and nets โ€“ a definite highlight if you have budding cricketers, so itโ€™s worth packing a bat and ball. The park is dog friendly too, as long as pups are kept on a lead, so the whole family can come along. Youโ€™ll find plenty of bins and the caretakers do a thorough job of cleaning between guests; bathrooms have spacious showers and toilets and were clean and functional on our visits.

In the warmer months, the swimming pool is a lifesaver. From outside the fence it looks quite modest, but once youโ€™re in, itโ€™s surprisingly roomy and copes well with a crowd. Around the pool there are grassy spots, gazebos and a handful of lounge chairs (these get snapped up quickly), plus space to lay out towels and enjoy snacks. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, and thereโ€™s a no-bombies rule which helps keep things a little calmer โ€“ though youโ€™ll still see the occasional cheeky splash from kids and adults alike. Security cameras are in place and staff are quick to step in if things get too rowdy, which adds peace of mind.

One of the biggest perks of staying here is easy access to Wave Rock itself. Caravan park guests receive free access, and thereโ€™s a short walkway from the park entrance up towards the rock. If youโ€™re in a camper or rooftop tent, waking up to the sight of the โ€œprehistoric waveโ€ towering nearby is pretty special. Beyond Wave Rock, youโ€™re also close to other local attractions on the wider Wave Rock precinct, making it easy to fill a couple of days exploring without driving far.

Food-wise, you can grab meals and supplies in the town of Hyden or head across the road to the cafรฉ. Thereโ€™s also an onsite kiosk at the caravan park serving takeaway coffees, ice creams and basic essentials like milk โ€“ handy if you run out of something. That said, itโ€™s still wise to bring the bulk of your groceries with you so youโ€™re not caught short, especially on busy weekends or public holidays.
