If you’re looking for an enchanting, interactive experience for the whole family, The Butterfly House at The Cube is a must-visit this festival season. As part of the Embrace the Unusual Joondalup Festival, this pop-up performance invites children (and their grown-ups) into a whimsical world of transformation, wonder, and discovery.
Nestled within The Cube on Boas Avenue—just a short stroll from Joondalup Library—The Butterfly House blends storytelling, performance, and hands-on fun in a way that captivates young minds. You’ll be greeted by a friendly Lepidopterist (a butterfly and moth expert) who eagerly shares fascinating facts about these delicate creatures. Her stories weave science with a little bit of magic, making for an engaging and educational experience.
Children can immerse themselves in the theme by creating their own butterflies at the craft station before the session, a perfect way to kick-start their adventure.
Once their creations are complete, little ones can wander through the area and sit for a photo or two on the grassy couch…
But the real highlight? The Butterfly Sanctuary, where kids get to release their paper butterflies and watch them “take flight” with the help of some well-placed special effects. The host encourages them to use their imagination and “magic” to bring the butterflies to life—an experience that left many young faces glowing with excitement. We all got to take home a plant that attracts butterflies to go plant in our garden.
Children can also meet the spiny leaf stick insects and stick bugs – they have to spot them first! So beautiful to see!
Designed for children, the 5:30pm and 6:45pm sessions are the perfect way to wind down the day before dinner, while the 8:00pm show caters to adults, which we have not seen.
While The Butterfly House is an absolute standout, The Cube itself is a fantastic place to spend time at the festival. With easy access, great food vendors (think tacos, pizza, and gelato), and a lively, welcoming atmosphere, it’s the ideal family-friendly spot to relax and enjoy the evening.
The Butterfly House is a gentle, magical, and beautifully interactive experience that encourages curiosity and wonder. Whether your child loves insects or just enjoys a bit of make-believe, this pop-up performance is a festival highlight. Don’t miss it!
The Joondalup Festival runs from March 15 to April. Check the online schedule at joondalupfestival.com.au for performance dates and times.
