If you’re looking for a unique, screen-free family activity in Perth, the Re-PLAY workshop at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is a must-do. Located right in the heart of Perth City, AGWA is easily accessible by train—simply hop off at Perth Underground Station and you’re right at the gallery’s doorstep.

The Re-PLAY workshops are part of AGWA’s newest exhibition, developed with WA artist Maxxi Minaxi May. Designed for children aged 5–12 (and their grown-ups!), these dynamic sessions encourage families to rethink how we see everyday objects. Instead of a bowl being just a bowl, kids are invited to see it as a semi-sphere ready to become part of a colourful sculpture.

Workshops begin with a short, engaging talk from a teaching artist, before families choose a table covered with an array of quirky materials.

From there, the fun begins—each person takes turns adding items to create a collaborative artwork. It’s hands-on, imaginative, and thought-provoking, and it’s amazing to see how children’s ideas flow when given the freedom to play.

Our four-year-old loved it, and even our toddler found plenty to keep busy with while the session unfolded.

The gallery space itself is inspiring, with bright displays, city views from Gallery 9, and additional interactive stations like magnetic art-making. Visitors can also explore May’s other vibrant installations, including Sticky Dots (a giant wall of colourful stickers) and Reduce Speed (street signs reimagined into abstract art).

With free entry, a family-friendly café, gift shop, and bathroom facilities on site, AGWA makes for a full day out. You can even pair your visit with the WA Museum Boola Bardip or State Library nearby.

Workshops run on select weekdays and weekends—book online via Eventbrite or AGWA’s website to secure your spot.
