We attended our first Koorda’s Crew workshop at Wanneroo Regional Museum, and it was such a beautiful, gentle experience for little ones. The session, Djeran Little Hands, was grounded in the Noongar season of Djeran, a time of change, cooler weather and the colour nodjam, meaning green.

The workshop was calm, welcoming and wonderfully child-led. Children were invited to move through five hands-on, play-based stations at their own pace, with each activity thoughtfully connected to the season. It felt inclusive and relaxed, giving little ones the freedom to explore, create and discover in a way that suited them.

There was a lovely mix of sensory play, movement and nature-based creativity. Children explored natural elements, including painting with flowering plants, and each space encouraged curiosity without feeling rushed or overwhelming. It was the kind of session where children could engage deeply, but gently, through play.

What made the workshop especially meaningful was the way Noongar culture and language were woven naturally throughout. During the session, children learnt about seasonal changes during Djeran, including morning dew on the grass, the smell of rain, birds eating flying ants, and how paperbark and kangaroo are used for protection.

Through play, we also explored Noongar words including nodjam for green, djildjit for fish, booyi for turtle, koya for frog, koornt for shelter, yongka for kangaroo and bibool for paperbark. It was a special way for children and families to connect with culture in an age-appropriate and hands-on way.

As both a mum and teacher, I really appreciated how inclusive and thoughtfully facilitated the session was. It felt respectful, nurturing and engaging, with plenty of space for children to follow their own interests while still being gently guided through the themes of the workshop.

Wanneroo Regional Museum itself is a beautiful family-friendly space to visit. The centre thoughtfully embeds Indigenous perspectives throughout, with a dedicated Noongar setup and an engaging early years hands-on area that is regularly refreshed to keep little ones curious. It is also clean, welcoming and easy to enjoy with children, with friendly staff and a variety of visiting sessions on offer.
