Finding activities that get children away from screens and to the outdoors can sometimes feel impossible, but our recent visit to Dawsonโ€™s Garden World, Forrestfield, turned out to be one of the most surprisingly enjoyable family outings weโ€™ve had in ages! Located in Perthโ€™s foothills, this long-standing garden centre has built a strong reputation among local plant enthusiasts for its extensive range, knowledgeable staff and welcoming atmosphere.

You might think that a garden centre might not sound like an exciting venue for children, but Dawsonโ€™s offers much more than plants. The colourful displays, spacious layout, peaceful atmosphere, and interactive experience make it a fantastic place for families seeking a relaxing activity.

The moment we arrived, my girls were fascinated by the rows of vibrant flowers, towering trees, quirky garden ornaments and enormous pots. It felt more like exploring a mini botanical garden than simply shopping for plants. From succulents, fruit trees, native plants, seasonal flowers, herbs, to vegetable seedlings, theyโ€™ve got you all covered.

One of the best parts of visiting is how kid-friendly the centre is! Thereโ€™s plenty of room for prams and young children to wander safely. Children can grab a trolley to explore the centre while picking up the familyโ€™s next plants. While exploring, there are informative signs about the different plants, which add a lovely educational touch to the experience.

Another highlight is the many beautifully landscaped spots with seating areas throughout the centre- including a charming Japanese garden that offers a perfect photo-taking opportunity.

The girls loved the fairy garden thatโ€™s beautifully set up for children to explore.

There is also a play area which features an exciting climbing platform and even a carousel for the whole family to enjoy.

Another huge plus for families is the cafรฉ, which has a kidsโ€™ menu. After exploring the nursery, families can enjoy a cuppa and snacks while the kids play in the fenced play area. There is also a shaded outdoor sitting area with accessible toilets located in the centre.

What really stood out was how welcoming and helpful the staff are. They happily answered questions from both adults and curious kids (especially for parents who may not know much about gardening, their advice and guidance are genuinely helpful!).

The centre also stocks a comprehensive range of gardening essentials, including pots, fertilisers, soils, mulch, decorative items and giftware.

Overall, whether you are looking for plants, inspiration for your next backyard project, or simply a fuss-free family-friendly activity, Dawsonโ€™s Garden World in Forrestfield is absolutely worth visiting. Itโ€™s educational, relaxing, visually beautiful and surprisingly entertaining for children of all ages!
