Looking for something a little different to do with the kids in Perth this weekend? For four nights only from 25th to 28th September, a huge water screen rises from Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) at Elizabeth Quay for The Story of Kooyar.
This free immersive light and water show brings a beautiful Noongar story to life right on the waterfront, making it a lovely way to introduce children to Noongar storytelling while learning about the local stories, culture and the history of the place we live- all while enjoying a memorable evening together as a family.
At the centre of the story is Kooyar, a frog who journeys through the six Noongar seasons, guided by his sacred song that helps bring rain and life back to Boodja (Country). Kooyar’s journey shares an important story about nature, renewal and the deep connection between the people, animals and Country- all beautifully brought to life by cultural advisor and storyteller Rose Walley and distinguished Whadjuk Noongar artist Biara Martin.
For little ones, the water projections are definitely a huge highlight! Watch as the changing seasons unfold with black cockatoos taking flight, new plants bursting through the earth, flames dancing across the dry landscape and birdsong filling the air. Delivered in partnership with the Western Australia Government, through DevelopmentWA and Tourism WA, this spectacular experience is sure to capture their little imaginations.
There is also something particularly magical about watching the story appear across the water, especially with the Perth City lights surrounding you. This 20-minutes show loops throughout the evening which is handy when visiting with children as you don’t have to plan your evening around one specific show time.
Besides the immersive show, there is also lots to discover around the Quay. Keep an eye out for Karak (red-tailed black cockatoo) puppets moving around the precinct, adding a fun surprise for everyone before and after the show. Live performances by Indigenous dance group Corroboree for Life add another layer of First Nation storytelling through dance, music and traditional costume.
The Story of Kooyar runs from 25th to 28th September from 7pm to 10pm at Elizabeth Quay. It is free and suitable for all ages. But if you are heading in with younger children, it is worth knowing that the show includes bright and flashing lights as well as immersive audio-visual elements. There is also a dedicated accessible viewing area near the Elizabeth Quay Carousel. Auslan interpretation is available on Sunday 27th September from 7pm to 9pm.
For a family outing, this is a lovely opportunity to slow down, enjoy Perth after dark and experience a story of Country together. So, pack a jacket, grab the children and head down to Elizabeth Quay to see Kooyar’s story come alive on the water.
