Is your child Minecraft obsessed? CraftDojo has school holiday workshops and weekly term classes that introduce kids to the world of Minecraft and challenge even the most experienced crafter. There’s some serious learning going on in these Minecraft sessions too! Kids think, read, spell, count and multiply as they build, dig and discover.
My 9-year-old joined a group of 15 kids (ninjas) for a school holiday workshop where they were set the challenge of building a Minecraft zoo, with the best build winning a prize.
With support from two Club Sensei, ninjas needed to develop an idea for their zoo and use Minecraft to build enclosures and habitats for animals they ‘spawn’. Ninjas are only limited by their imagination, with endless potential for creation.
At the end of the five-hour session, my ninja gave me a tour of his zoo creation, explaining that he chose to build a ‘nether zoo with strider cars to move around over hot, deep lava’. In his words, the workshop was a workout for his brain!
I must admit that before this workshop, I thought Minecraft was just a game that ate up my child’s screen time. I was wrong! There’s so much creativity and thought involved. Sensei Wes explained that Minecraft is like a digital Lego and is universal in its reach. Anyone can get involved, and CraftDojo is a great place to get started or learn more.
Ninjas can work together in a team or independently on a private server with monitored chat that allows interaction between kids. There’s a real sense of camaraderie with ninjas helping each other out – building computer skills and knowledge.
CraftDojo is perfect for kids aged 7-16, but younger kids who can play Minecraft independently and are able to respect other ninjas’ builds are also welcome. Anyone from the absolute beginner to the more advanced crafter will benefit from CraftDojo workshops.
At school holiday workshops, the ninjas focus on one project for the session. Kids who participate in the term sessions attend weekly classes where they work through a series of projects designed to improve their skills, before advancing to the next level to work on more challenging builds.
While recommended, kids don’t need their own Minecraft account or laptop to participate as CraftDojo have devices to borrow. However, if kids have access to a laptop, you can purchase the Java edition of Minecraft online so that they can continue their builds at home. All the technical information is available on CraftDojo’s website.
Weekly term classes are held in Ellenbrook, Currambine and North Perth. School holiday sessions are held in various locations around Perth. Keep an eye on CraftDojo’s Facebook page for more information.
