Canning Arts Group (CAG) in Riverton is a not- for- profit self-funded community-based organisation that has serve the community for more than 50 years by providing affordable art classes to adults and children.
Art classes and workshops such as pottery, painting, glass slumping and framing are offered to their members, the general public and people with disabilities and special needs. For children ages 7 to 16 years old, CAG offers school term programs in pottery (wheel and hand work), different mediums of art classes and a fantastic school holiday art program (which does not run during the summer holidays) for them to gain new skills.
CAG’s ArtsFun! school holiday program offers a variety of arts programs, from tie-dye, drawing, and acrylic painting to pottery. Children get the chance to explore something new and have fun while making their own masterpieces. These classes generally run for 2 hours, otherwise stated, and parents are not required to stay with them during the lessons.
The girls had their first pottery lesson, making a pottery chicken, during the school holiday. They should always wear old clothes to such classes, as they tend to get messy and dirty making their masterpieces.
The studio is clean with well- equipped working spaces. Missy 10 was over the moon to see their pottery wheels and can’t wait to join their pottery wheel throwing class.
Missy 7 could easily follow the instructions and handle her clay. The instructors were very patient with her and were always there to help her if she needed it.
After completing their artworks, the instructors then checked their work again before they are sent to their kiln to be fired. The children are told that occasionally pieces can break during the firing process so they can’t guarantee their pottery as envisioned. It took about 4 weeks before their artworks were ready to be collected at CAG.
There are artworks on display and for sale by their members at the gallery inside the building. We are told that the exhibition’s theme changes regularly with a variety of displays.
Outside the studio, there is a beautiful rest area with artworks to enjoy. Free parking is conveniently located just outside the building.
