The Lolly Stop Whiteman Park

A fun day out at Whiteman Park usually involves plenty of walking, playing, picnicking and “just one more go down the lighthouse slide” at Pia’s Place Playground… so naturally, a visit to The Lolly Stop is pretty much essential – of only to replace a little energy *wink* . Right in the heart of Whiteman Park Village, this old-school sweet shop is packed with jars of colourful lollies, chocolates and all the nostalgic treats parents and grandparents will remember from their own childhood. The kids’ eyes widened the second we walked through the door.

For parents, it’s a lovely little hit of nostalgia. You may spot sweets you haven’t seen since you were handing over pocket money at the local shop. I have got to say, the best bit is the old-school pick ’n’ mix! Oh the memories of walking down to Lesmurdie deli in the 1990s and choosing this and that for 1c or 2c a lolly. Here, grab a bag and let the kiddos choose their favourites from the shelves. There are jelly snakes, sour treats, fizzy peaches, lollipops, chocolate coated honeycomb, milk bottles, gobstoppers and plenty of colourful sweets to fill a bag with. Decision-making for the J-Man did take a while as there are so many options – but that’s all part of the fun.

The girls on the other hand made a bee-line for the most colourful fairy floss in a bag.

Whether you’re a fan of a classic sherbet bomb, chocolate freckles, boiled lollies or a proper mixed bag, there’s something delightfully old-fashioned about choosing your treats by the scoop. There’s locally made goodies from Whistlers and Morish nuts. Even international bites – Hersherys, Twinkies, Milk Duds and more.

The Lolly Stop makes a brilliant reward after exploring one of Whiteman Park’s many attractions. Pop in after visiting the Motor Museum, the Tractor Museum or the Children’s Forest. It’s also a handy stop after a play at one of the park’s many playgrounds, a ride on the vintage tram or train, or a family picnic under the trees. You don’t need a huge bag either. A small pick ’n’ mix bag is perfect for sharing on the way home – or for bribing the kids into leaving the playground without a meltdown. No judgement here!

Being located in the village means it’s easy to find and simple to add into a Whiteman Park day out. There are toilets, picnic areas, cafés and loads of family attractions nearby, so you can easily build a whole day around your sweet stop. If you’re planning a visit to Whiteman Park, leave a little room in the itinerary for a trip to The Lolly Stop. It’s colourful, nostalgic and guaranteed to bring a smile to little faces. A simple, sweet addition to a fab family day out.
