Gosnells Toy Library is a fantastic community-run resource for families looking for an affordable, sustainable and fun way to keep children engaged through play. Located in Beckenham, the toy library gives families access to a huge range of quality toys, games, puzzles and educational resources without the need to buy, store and eventually outgrow everything at home.

The library supports families with children aged from babies through to around 10 years, with a collection of more than 1,500 toys and resources designed to encourage learning, development and family connection. It is a great option for parents, grandparents, carers and extended family members who want fresh play ideas without constantly purchasing new toys.

One of the biggest benefits of joining a toy library is variety. Children can explore different types of play as they grow, from baby and toddler toys to early learning resources, imaginative play, puzzles, sensory toys, ride-ons, gross motor equipment, STEM toys, board games and school readiness activities. Being able to rotate toys regularly helps keep playtime exciting, while also reducing household clutter.

Gosnells Toy Library is also a cost-effective choice for families. Members can borrow up to eight toys at a time, giving children the chance to try a wide range of items before families decide whether something is worth buying. Members also have the option to place a hold on toys for a small fee. It is a more sustainable way to play, as toys are reused and shared within the local community rather than ending up unused in cupboards or going to landfill.

Each toy is carefully labelled with useful information including the toy name, number of pieces, age suitability, toy cost, a short description and cleaning requirements before return. Families are encouraged to give toys a general clean before bringing them back, so they are ready for the next borrower.

Membership options include casual, standard, volunteer+ and off-duty memberships, with 1 month, 6 month and 12-month choices available. The casual 1-month membership is a handy option for families who would like to try the service before committing to a longer term. Standard and Volunteer+ memberships include rostered volunteer shifts, while Off Duty memberships are available for those who prefer not to volunteer or are unable to. New memberships incur a once-off joining fee, and current concession card holders can access concession pricing on all membership types except casual memberships.
Benefits of standard and volunteer+ memberships include upskilling, meeting new families, making new friends and mixing with people from similar cultural backgrounds. In addition, members are often able to claim first dibs on toys returned during their roster shifts.

The toy library also offers Supported Borrowing Sessions for families who may benefit from a quieter and lower sensory borrowing environment. These sessions run on Fridays from 9:30am to 11:30am and may include smaller numbers of families, reduced noise and stimulation, visual supports and timers, plus access to sensory supports such as headphones, fidgets, a tent and beanbags for quiet time. Families are welcome to walk in during opening hours to speak with the toy librarians, or email the library to learn more.

Gosnells Toy Library is family-friendly and practical for visiting with children. There is a Playground outside, toilets on site, baby changing facilities, wheelchair access and a couch or seating area where families can sit while children test out toys. It is a welcoming community space where families can browse, borrow and connect with others.

Safety and toy care are also considered carefully. Toys that require batteries are provided without batteries, helping to prevent corrosion or damage to battery compartments and encouraging safer toy maintenance. For safety reasons, toys requiring button batteries are not available.

Families looking to declutter can also donate suitable toys to the library. Donations are welcome during opening hours, with a large orange donation bin located inside the library. Cloth items are excluded from donations.

Gosnells Toy Library also offers party hire equipment for both members and non-members. Options may include giant outdoor games, foam blocks, tables and chairs, party game packs and large play equipment suitable for birthdays, celebrations and community events. Families can complete an online party hire enquiry form, and the team will advise on availability and pricing.

For updates about open days, community events, activities, programs, special sessions and announcements, families can follow Gosnells Toy Library on Facebook and Instagram.
