With the school holidays fast approaching, are you looking for some pocket-friendly activities for the kids? You will be surprised to know that most of the local libraries run school holiday programs, and some are even free! So why donโt you look up the nearest library and see whatโs on this school holiday?
Our local library in the City of Cockburn has 3 branches and offers a series of programs mainly targeted for school-age children during the school holidays.
I have been bringing my girls to these holiday programs for a while now, and they really enjoyed it and look forward to it during each term break. They love to make new friends there, get hands-on, make some crafts, and bring them home!
The themes of the programs are different for each holiday break, so there is always something new for the kids to learn and explore.
From space, planets, oceans, animals, and plants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders week with NAIDOC theme, STEM activities to workshops like meeting the author/ illustrator. Each event has an age limit, so the kids are doing activities that are relevant to their age, so itโs best to double-check that when booking.
Each session usually runs for 1-1 ยฝ hours, and parent supervision is recommended to help out with the younger kids.
After the sessions, kids can stay in the library and enjoy more quiet reading and borrowing their books home.
Bookings are required, and tickets do generally sell out quite quickly.
When the school holidays are over, Cockburn Libraries offers STEM Club, Lego Club, Creative kidsโ class as their after-school activities for the older kids too.
And for the younger toddlers, library is a great place for them to hear about stories and meet new friends during their Storytime session or Pram Jams sessions.
They even have stories read out in different languages โ Mandarin and Portuguese!
