Did you know that 1 in 4 Aussie kids supported by Eat Up schools need an Eat Up lunch? Eat Up is Australiaโs only organisation providing free lunches to students on a national scale. To date, they have provided more than 4 million (and counting) free lunches to disadvantaged Aussie kids in need. Each week, with the help of their partners and dedicated volunteers, they make and deliver thousands of fresh sandwiches and donated snacks directly to schools for the kids in need. Feeding hungry school kids so they can learn, grow and succeed is what they do!
So, if you are looking for a great cause to teach our little ones about giving back to their community, why not support them by coming along to their public sandwich-making events! These are fun, fast and very productive- we made more than 2000 sandwiches in an hour!
We got the chance to meet Eat Upโs founder, Lyndon, and his team at our first Eat Upโs event at Southlands Boulevard, where we learnt about how Eat Up was started.
The sandwich-making event was nicely set up when we got there. We had a brief orientation and food hygiene practices, then everyone got assigned a role in the whole sandwich-making train.
You work in a group of four- 2 for buttering bread, 1 for adding cheese slice, 1 for wrapping. Then the โrunnersโ help with collecting all the made sandwiches and running errands to top up each table with bread, cheese and butter. This made the whole process very efficient and well organised.
The girls got tasked to butter the bread and add the cheese slices, which they did very well.
It was such a remarkable cause to make more than 2000 sandwiches in an hour with the whole group that day! You get a strong sense of contribution, positivity and camaraderie! The girls went home that day with their hearts filled, knowing that someone would enjoy their sandwiches.
Make sure you follow them on Facebook or Instagram to hear about upcoming events to join them for this remarkable cause, or help by donating or fundraising!
*Kids under 12 are available to volunteer as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
