Luckily, there are plenty of family-friendly beaches that are sheltered from big swells, have playgrounds and picnic areas making a trip to the beach a fun and cheap outdoor activity. Kwillena Gabi Pool, Mandurah

Kwillena Gabi Pool located on Mandurah’s Eastern Foreshore South Precinct is unlike anything else in Perth and it has been specifically designed with families in mind. The calm water and shallow beach entry make it perfect for kids of all ages.

Yanchep Lagoon

The reef at Yanchep Lagoon is about 20 metres from the shore, which creates a sheltered swimming hole for young children. The water is shallow with low waves making it an excellent place to snorkel and also introduce children to fishing.

Rockingham Beach

The calm and protected waters of Rockingham Beach run along the fantastic Rockingham Foreshore, which is a lovely park for families, making it a spot you can spend the whole day by the beach. The Pirate Playground is a popular feature at the foreshore park too.

Hillarys Boat Harbour Beach

The sheltered kiddies beach at Hillarys Boat Harbour is so calm it’s almost like swimming in a pool and older kids will love the pontoon with a slippery slide. There are shade sails on the beach to sit under and a playground in the sand too. Next to Hillarys Boat Harbour, you’ll find Sorrento Beach which is popular with families, especially with its recent addition of a shark net.

Cottesloe Beach

Cottesloe Beach is Perth’s most iconic beach and loved by families. The grassy terraces and pure white sand, as well as the many cafes and restaurants, make it a popular place for a day at the beach. At the south end of the beach, there are a few shady shelters on the sand, but you’ll have to get there early to score a spot under the shade.

Penguin Island Beaches

The Penguin Island beaches are beautiful. The sheltered waters on the south side of the island are calm and shallow, making them ideal for small children to swim and paddle. Some of the beaches also have shady grassed areas nearby, so pack a picnic!

Mullaloo Beach 

The long, wide sandy beach at Mullaloo is practically perfect and families love pitching a sun shelter here and frolicking in the crystal clear waters. A grassy park lies behind the beach, where there are two great playgrounds, lots of shade and plenty of room for a game of ball.

Rottnest Island       

Rottnest Island is loaded with stunning family-friendly beaches. The Basin, which is protected by the reef, is especially popular as it’s located between the main settlement at Thompson Bay and Longreach Bay.

Coogee Beach
Coogee Beach is a sheltered beach where there is generally no surf. Kids can also paddle and swim in the shady spot under the Jetty or take their fishing rod along.  Nearby, the Port Coogee Marina Beach is also a great shallow and sheltered beach for families.

Rosslare

Rosslare Beach is a hidden beach in an enclave found at Mindarie Marina. The water at the small beach is shallow and very calm – great for floating around in a blow-up dingy!

Trigg     

Trigg Beach is a popular spot for kid’s surf classes. There can be strong rips, so be careful when swimming with younger children. Nearby Clarko Reserve is very popular for family picnic and BBQs.

Mettam’s Pool 

Mettam’s Pool is a natural pool created by a surrounding reef. This beach is particularly popular with little swimmers as the waters of the pool are very calm. It’s a perfect spot to introduce kids to snorkelling, as there are loads of fish and starfish living on the reef.

The Lido 

The Lido, otherwise known as Mandurah Children’s beach, is found right over the footbridge from Dolphin Quay. The man-made beach is particularly popular with little ones as it’s so calm. It’s also right next to Keith Holmes Reserve, where there’s two playgrounds – a perfect spot for a family BBQ.

The Lido Mandurah

Village Beach, Wannaup

Located just 15 minutes away from The Lido is Village Beach in Wannaup. Located on the canals this man-made beach makes for a great child-friendly beach as it is nice and calm and flat, with sand to play or grass surrounding the beach to sit and have a picnic.
