Why not be Sun Smart? Perth can have some extreme temperatures, and experiences high UV rating regularly. In addition to sun hats and sunscreen, shaded parks protect delicate childhood skin on hot or high UV days. Parks with natural shade or shade sails are perfect for keeping children safer in these conditions.

Britannia Reserve Pump Track Britannia Reserve Pump Track is a 1.2km pump track and nature bike trail in Leederville. Close to the city, it’s a great spot to take active kids of all ages out riding. Britannia Reserve Pump Track was originally installed as part of a Pop-Up Play initiative in April 2019. It has quickly become a permanent fixture. Britannia Reserve is one of City of Vincent’s largest open parklands. The pump track was created using natural materials. Manning Park in Spearwood is the perfect spot to take the kids out for a picnic and play in the park. The reserve is huge with four car parks in total and plenty of wide open grassed areas. The playground itself is quite amazing, plenty for all ages, stages and abilities. There are shade sails over each section and plenty of trees to pull up under too. The infamous pirate ship playground at Heathcote Reserve in Applecross is probably one of the first few ‘super playgrounds’ in Perth. We love this little park. Situated in the new Vertex Estate in Yanchep lies a small but great park for young ones. There is a large wooden climbing frame featuring different options to get to the top including a rock wall, wooden steps, ropes and more. Carine Open Space is one of our local and favourite parks to head to on the weekend as there are oodles to do and see. We usually spend a few hours there if it’s nice weather and take the kids scooters/bikes and the dog. This is a big favourite for dog walkers on the weekend and they sometimes have organised sporting comps on at the weekend so it can get busy at peak times. We discovered this great little park just around the corner from Little Banksia Cafe in Kensington. It has a lot of features including a nature play area and playground. The main play area is covered with shade sails and the nature play area is shaded naturally. The afternoon we went was warm so the natural shade and trees around the park were lovely. Gibbon Park, Mosman Park Gibbon Park is the latest nature playground in Mosman Park. This park includes a mix of nature play elements and traditional play equipment that’s sure to satisfy active children! On arriving Miss 6 raced straight for the traditional play equipment first. William Henry Oval Caversham is situated nearby to Caversham Community Centre, and close to Suffolk Street before Colorino Avenue. The oval itself hosts a lot of community sports and also has two playgrounds that are worth a visit. The first play area is suitable for older children, ages 3 and up, depending on your child’s climbing ability. The play area is sand-based, featuring a variety of equipment for the children to use. Leafy Somerly Park in the northern suburb of Clarkson features a bright playground suitable for kids of all ages, including traditional play equipment mixed with some sensory play. On arriving and walking down the path and under a tall gazebo to the playground, the first things to grab Miss 4’s attention was the musical play equipment. A board with different shapes to drum on and chiming pipes of different heights and pitch stand at one end along with two spring rockers and a spinning toy. Garvey Park is a great local park just at the end of Fauntleroy Avenue on the river’s edge in Ascot. The kids love the playground as it has something to suit both my sensible 5 year old and my adventurous almost 3 year old! The play equipment is all on sand with a large sail shade over most of the equipment which is great in the warmer months. Beecroft Park is found opposite Empire Village Shopping Centre in City Beach and is popular with local families. The playground is sand fall based and naturally shaded by mature trees, as well as shade sails. The sand is littered with a lot of leaf and sticks, so little ones may prefer to keep their shoes on. Partridge Way Reserve in Thornlie boasts some excellent equipment. This park is suited to kids aged 3 and up as the climbing frames are quite large. There is an obstacle course for older kids to try out their strength and coordination. If you like to play sports then there is a basketball hoop, cricket pitch and plenty of lawn area to set up on. Lawler Park is a green, leafy park in Floreat with a playground suitable for toddlers and upwards. There are lots of play opportunities here to keep the kids busy. The larger playground structure includes two slides of different sizes, ring-shaped monkey bars, swinging platforms to climb across, some climbing ropes, and a tricky balancing beam with vertical bars to up the difficulty level. Wyong Reserve in Bentley is a great little park with a lot going on. The playground is fully fenced and has a pathway running around it that is designed as a road to ride scooters and bikes along. There a few large speed humps, and we said next time we come we will have to bring the scooter. There are benches around the playground and an undercover area with BBQs and picnic benches. Stirling Civic Gardens Stirling Civic Gardens is a hidden gem. Concealed from the road, it is a lovely park with manicured gardens and plenty of shade provided by the large trees. The playground area has recently undergone an upgrade, and there is now more play equipment than ever for your children to enjoy. The park features small lakes and water features, home to ducks and other water birds. There are paved paths winding their way through the gardens. The brand new $1.4 million Lottery-West funded Whale Playground has opened up at Scarborough Beach. The playground is inspired by Noongar culture and features a blue whale skeleton as its main theme. It caters for children of all abilities with elevated wheelchair accessible sand tables and soft fall surfacing with ramps between play spaces. Clarko Reserve is a coastal reserve located at Trigg Beach at the end of Karrinyup Road. The jewel colours of the verdant green grass and shimmering blue sea beyond the dunes is a feast for the eyes. At a sheltered end of the reserve, near the beach car park, is a good sized playground with equipment to suit a range of children. Frye Park or Pirate Park in Kelmscott is a great park which features a large pirate ship but also has a fenced toddler playground and picnic tables in the same area. The toddler area and picnic tables are covered with shade sails in summer. The pirate ship has plenty to do with three slides, climbing challenges and treasure hunts. Ivy Watson Playground in Kings Park is a great playground built specifically for 6 year olds and under. The area is fenced but it is large with several different play areas and can get very busy so you’ll need to keep an eye on your little ones. Set on the sheltered beach at the vibrant Hillarys Boat Harbour is this lovely playground. With a nautical theme including its very own rocking boat, there are steps and ladders, bridges and even a double slide to race down. The equipment is well designed for younger children with toddlers confidently navigating their way around. Pat O’Hara Reserve, Morley As of June 2021 a new playground has been installed at Pat O’Hara Reserve in Morley. This fantastic new play area consists of traditional equipment, nature play elements and a new netball court adjacent to a huge oval. With all this, it’s a great park to take kids of all ages. Set in reclaimed parkland alongside Railway Street in Cottesloe, you can find a one of Perth’s newest nature playgrounds, East Cottesloe Nature Play Trail. Including a scooter track, a fenced toddler park and wooden climbing equipment, this nature playground has something to suit kids from tiny tots to teens. Dianella BMX Track As of July 2021, Dianella Regional Open Space now features a stunning new BMX track. Dianella BMX Track is naturally shaded and the perfect spot for kids of all ages to race off some energy. Stage One and Stage Two of the new track, built by City of Stirling, was completed in July. As of autumn 2022, Coventry Village in Morley now has a fenced outdoor playground. In addition to the existing indoor playground, this is located close to cafes and restaurants. This lovely lakeside spot features a shaded children’s playground, exercise equipment and paths perfect for bikes and scooters.
