Tucked away in inner city suburb is Mabel Talbot Park. The absolute gem of a park has not just one, but two playgrounds!
Mabel Talbot Park is fairly compact, but my word a lot is packed into this wonderful space built around a small lake! The main sand-fall playground is shaded and located close to the south side of the lake. It is fenced on the sides that are closest to the playground. This pirate themed playground fantastic for younger children, as there are lots of things to do at ground level (like a swan bouncer) as well as baby swings and a cubby house.
Kids of all ages will enjoy the pirate play, with a steering wheel, cannons and more for imaginative play. The main structure also features small climbing walls, climbing ropes, and two slides.
There’s also a nest swing and regular swings.
The playground on the north side of the lake is a wooden obstacle course, with balancing logs, monkey bars and more – perfect for ninja warrior wannabes!
There are shaded seating areas and BBQ facilities next to both of the playgrounds.
There is a flat path that winds around the lake, which is about 500m, connecting both of the playgrounds. I’d definitely encourage kids to take along a scooter or bike, as the lake loop isn’t too long.
Around the lake kids will find viewing platforms, artwork and educational signs, making it a great spot to learn about the water birds and other local wildlife.
Toilets are found near the Henderson Park oval, but may not be open at all times. The Cambridge Street Cafe strip is just up the road too, if you want to grab a takeaway before a play in the park. Dogs are allowed in the park, as long as they’re on a leash. There is a grassed area, with plenty of space to run around or kick a ball.
You’ll also find a basketball half-court.
There is street parking available, as well as a shady carpark at the Henderson Park clubrooms (watch out for falling figs though!). This is located on the North East side of the park and an easy walk to both of the playgrounds.
Mabel Talbot Park is a brilliant park with playgrounds, pathways and the picturesque lake, teeming with wildlife. It would be great for a picnic without the crowds that other inner city parks can get.
Mabel Talbot Park is found at 85 Jersey Street, Jolimont.
