Nestled adjacent to the Subiaco Library, the Subiaco Museum is a hidden gem for families seeking a low-key, meaningful outing in Subiaco. Housed in a heritage building, despite its small size, the museum offers a surprisingly rich window into Subiacoโ€™s past. With a collection of over 12,000 items- including photographs, artworks, and artefacts- the museumโ€™s thoughtfully curated exhibits bring the communityโ€™s history to life, highlighting the moments that have shaped Subiaco over time and sparking your little oneโ€™s curiosity along the way!

What we love:

One of the highlights is the collection of local artefacts- everything from everyday household items to cherished memorabilia. Children are able to get up close to these old household tools and give them a try themselves.

The recreated scenes from Subiacoโ€™s past bring history to life, especially through vintage objects, offering children a tangible glimpse into the past. Children can try the vintage typewriter while sending their postcard at the post office, or play at the tea room.

Another standout is the museumโ€™s focus on daily life. It explored how people lived, worked, and spent their time in Subiaco, making the โ€œthen and nowโ€ comparisons both easy and engaging- whether itโ€™s seeing how the post office, kitchen and living room have evolved, or what children once wore.

Children can enjoy imaginative play, picturing themselves living in a different era as they dress up and pretend play in the museum.

Staff are friendly and approachable, always happy to chat or answer the childrenโ€™s โ€œwhy and whatโ€ questions. There are interactive elements throughout the museum and rotating exhibits that keep things fresh if you visit more than once.

Overall, the Subiaco Museum is a lovely option for a short and enriching family outing, especially if you are in the area. Unlike bigger museums, this is a short visit time (about 30minutes for us) and the quiet and calm environment feels welcoming rather than overwhelming (not too much to read too!)- ideal if you have younger children in tow.
