With American culture so prevalent in Australia, it’s no surprise the arrival of WA’s very first Taco Bell was met with loads of hype and excitement. If you want to check out the Californian chain Taco Bell in Perth, for now, you’ll have to head to Midland or Ellenbrook. A third store south of the river, in Canning Vale is opening today (July 15 2022).
Little Chef and I recently popped by the Midland store. I couldn’t be bothered queuing when it first opened, so I waited about 6 months before visiting! Mainly just to say we’d been.
With neon signs and street-art style murals, the interior brings cool vibes. We arrived in the middle of a lunchtime rush, so many tables weren’t cleaned down, and we were there quite a while. Luckily, we found a clear table outside, in the enclosed outdoor area.
Little chef chose a cheesy double-decker taco meal. While he said it was really tasty, like many international food chains, the advertised picture versus reality is very different! He chose this item mainly as its combo of a hard and soft shell taco is unique to Taco Bell. Unfortunately, the advertised melted cheese was more of a sprinkle of unmelted grated cheese. But hey, no biggie.
The double-decker has the best of both worlds with a grilled flatbread that is supposed to be covered with an ooey-gooey melted two-cheese blend and then wrapped around a crunchy taco. You choose from a choice of meat, plus there’s ranch dressing, lettuce and cheese. Served with your choice of chips (LC chose the seasoned fries, also a hit) and a drink (he chose frozen mountain dew).
I didn’t see a specific menu for little kids, though there is a “Snakaritos” menu with cheesy swirls, mini chicken quesadillas, beef burritos and single tacos. So this would easily double up for kids with small appetites. Sweet tooths will want to try the churros or chocodilla (chocolate sauce-filled quesadilla). If you enjoy fast food chains, be sure to head to Taco Bell.
