Never step on a snail. Never leave a red sock on the clothesline. And never, ever be late for a parade… 🐌

We were invited to experience Rules of Summer, an immersive puppetry production inspired by Shaun Tan’s award-winning book, and it was unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Throughout the performance, two children journey through a series of mysterious rules. With each rule that’s broken, the story unfolds in unexpected ways, exploring friendship, imagination, growing up and the emotions that come with it. Every audience member is left to discover their own meaning along the way.

From the moment the performance began, the theatre transformed into the boys’ world through incredible puppetry, shadow play, music and interactive moments that engaged all of the senses.

The kids absolutely loved the audience interaction. From bubbles floating through the theatre and snow-like crepe paper drifting from above, to the washing line, giant balls flying into the audience and the chance to throw them back, they were completely engaged from start to finish.

We all had a huge laugh when my eldest bravely ate “rabbit poo” (don’t worry… it was just a prune! 😂).

One of our favourite parts of the evening was staying for the Q&A with Harrison Lorenz-Daniel, Luke Joseph Ryan and Bronte Frances. It gave us a whole new appreciation for the production.

We learnt that the two characters intentionally have no names, allowing every audience member to interpret the story in their own way. Many of the puppets and objects throughout the performance are also open to interpretation, encouraging everyone to find their own meaning. The performers also explained why they never speak, instead using a kazoo to stay true to Shaun Tan’s storytelling while letting the audience’s imagination do the rest.

We also discovered the incredible puppets are handcrafted by the talented team at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, including the famous snail, which is brought to life using three different puppets. It was fascinating to hear how this production has travelled internationally, including to Hong Kong.

The audience interaction throughout the performance was fantastic and had the kids completely engaged. There are a few darker moments that may feel a little spooky for younger children, which is why the recommended age is 5+. I brought my 12, 8 and 4-year-old. My youngest present came in for a cuddle during a scene but never covered her eyes, and she still walked away saying she loved it.

Overall, Rules of Summer is a beautiful, imaginative and thought-provoking theatre experience that celebrates childhood, friendship and the power of imagination. It’s funny, emotional, interactive and unlike any performance we’ve experienced before.

Definitely one to add to your school holiday list! 🎭💛
