Wild West Exhibition on the Superscreen

Western Australian animals have been targeted as pests by locals and farmers. Some have been exploited for profit and hunted to near extinction. Native fauna have been celebrated as emblems and studied by scientists. They have been captured in photographs and in cages.
The stories in this exhibition are found in records created by government departments, including the CSIRO, Department of Defence and ABC. They show how Western Australians have interacted with the state’s unique wildlife and highlight changing attitudes towards animals and the environment.
Which animal was the target of a military campaign? What now beloved animal was dismissed as an annoying rodent? Why is there a whale tooth in the national archival collection?
Grab your binoculars, get out your field guide and spot your favourite animals in this expedition to the Wild West.
This digital exhibition is a sneak peak of the fascinating images and objects on display at the National Archive of Australia.

With glorious flower beds featuring tulips, hyacinths & daffodils lining the main street of town, the program includes free & low cost activities, which are all held in sheltered marquees or community buildings around the town. So whether you’re strolling through a gorgeous country garden, listening to stage and roving performers, or enjoying a Devonshire tea, you will be impressed at the colour and friendliness on the wonderful Nannup community. The festival program also includes open gardens, floral, art & quilt exhibitions, garden talks & workshops, and evokes the nostalgia of historical displays and vintage cars & bikes. Also for the first time we are offering a program for our little ones too.
And of course, if that’s not enough, it’s recommended to stop at the weekend village markets to pick up wonderful local arts and crafts & garden goodies to take home and enjoy too!

Man With A Pram 2021 – Perth

Everyone used to say ‘there’s nothing around for new dads’… now there is, thanks to DG. Get involved – Man with a Pram. See you there!

Attention all new and expecting fathers and father figures.

“Man With A Pram” is hitting Perth once again this year with a fun and free family event on Father’s Day – Sunday 5th September.

New dads, mums, grandparents and friends, join us with your prams and carriers at 8:30am, as we create “the village that raises a child”.

We will gather at Garvey Park where we grab a cuppa and begin our MWAP walk, with fathers pushing their infants and children in their prams whilst socialising with others from their region. After the walk, we will continue the celebration with fun activities for the family and a free BBQ by Mr Perfect – Men’s Health BBQ.

It’s a celebration of new life with the arrival of new babies into our communities as well as championing the importance of active fatherhood, all while supporting perinatal mental health.

This is a great opportunity to connect with other new dads, have a feed, spend time with your kids, win some great prizes but most of all help inspire and connect dads in this important stage of our lives.

Look forward to seeing you there

NAIDOC WEEK – BUSH TUCKER TALK & TASTING WITH DALE TILBROOK

Some events delivered by our NAIDOC Week partners may go ahead, pending announcements to be made later this week. For other events we are looking at alternative dates or delivery and will be in touch soon to let you know the plan.

We know it is extremely disappointing for many in our community who were looking forward to our NAIDOC Week celebrations, especially as last year’s events were also postponed due to COVID-19.

We’d especially like to thank all of our NAIDOC Week stakeholders, artists, workshop presenters and partners for being so flexible and working with us to ensure the events go ahead either next week or at a later date.

Thank you for your patience and we will be in touch soon with more details.

COVID 19 Family & Domestic Violence Information Session

Face to face workshop to help family and domestic violence victims in the current Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

We are organising a workshop for family and domestic violence victims. We have speakers from both legal and non-legal background, educating attendees about the operation of immigration law, family law and criminal law. Further, we have health experts providing advice on mental health.

Why are we doing this?Reports from across Australia suggest a significant increase in domestic violence cases related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, cases of domestic abuse frequently go unreported. This is especially true at this time of social restrictions when many people feel trapped in their home with the abuser. The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) released a Statistical Bulletin which revealed the high rate of domestic violence experienced by women during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. AIC revealed more than half of women who had experienced physical or sexual violence before the COVID-19 crisis said the violence had become more frequent or severe since the start of the pandemic.

We received much support from the City of Cockburn and different associations as many of the their members are currently in looking to escape violent family environment. Our goal is to equip attendees with the knowledge so that they can refer their members to the right legal and non-legal services to escape domestic violence.

NAIDOC WEEK – PICKLE DISTRICT FESTIVAL – MOVIE SCREENING – BRAN NUE DAE

MOVIE SCREENING – BRAN NUE DAE – complimentary popcorn and water – 11am at The Backlot Theatre

NAIDOC Week update

Due to uncertainty regarding COVID-19 restrictions next week, we have made the difficult decision to postpone some of our face to face NAIDOC Week events and deliver some activities online.

Thank you to everyone who has already made a booking for events.

A private movie screening at Backlot Theatre showing Bran Nue Dae.

Bran Nue Dae tells the story of a young man, Willie, who lives in Broome with his mother and is in love with a local girl, Rosie.

At the start of the school year he is sent back to Perth, under the care of a strict German priest. Willie ends up running away from school and finds himself lost and alone in Perth.

He befriends Uncle Tadpole, a streetwise man, who agrees to take him home to Broome. Uncle Tadpole tricks a German tourist and his hippie girlfriend into driving them the almost 2,500km trip. Willie is also racing against time to ensure he can win the heart of Rosie.

The film follows their escapades on the road, and the diverse characters they encounter. On their return to Broome a series of secrets are uncovered.

Enjoy complimentary popcorn and water provided by Gather Foods; a majority aboriginal-owned and led catering company featuring native foods.
