A Place to Call Home? Migrant Hostel Memories

Friday, 1 February to Monday, 23 March, 9am to 5pm
State Library of Western Australia, 25 Francis Street, Perth

The A Place to Call Home? photographic exhibition features highlights of a collection of around 22,000 photographs taken by government photographers documenting the experiences of post-World War II migrants to Australia. The photographs were taken between the late 1940s and the 1990s. Known as the Immigration Photographic Archive, the photographs form part of the National Archives of Australia collection. Images from the archive were used to encourage re-location to Australia to prospective migrants and to help local Australians welcome new migrants into the community.

The photographs strongly represent a time in Australian history that shaped the face of modern multiculturalism. Individuals, families and community groups will identify strongly with the images and will be able to reflect on both their own individual and shared experiences.

A national touring developed and presented by the National Archives of Australia. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.

FREE. No bookings required.

Duration: Saturday 01 February 2020 10:00AM to Sunday 05 April 2020 05:30PM during library opening hours.

Little Art Lab 1-4yo

Tuesday, 11 February, 9.15am to 10.15am
Woodville Pavillion, Namur Street, North Perth

LITTLE ART LAB
Build your child from the inside out with holistic art play.
Holistic definition: the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected to the whole.

All Little Art Lab classes emphasise the process of exploration instead of being outcome oriented.
Children build resilience and confidence through being allowed to discover what things do in their own way. When their parent takes on the role of observer, the child feels safe and trusted in their choices. This leads to a positive self esteem building the child from the inside out.

Little Art Lab classes contain a mixture of any of the following:

SENSORY PAINTING
Adventure through the texture, feel, smell, sound and the vibrant colours of paint.
Activities can include: painting with spaghetti, Jackson Pollock painting experimenting with drip and spatter, using rice or flour, using plungers for drip painting, tea bags, spray bottles, tape, sponges and more.

NATURE CONNECTION
Children and nature go together. Discover the beauty and versatility of nature in art and crafts. We play with sand, leaves, trees, flowers, honky nuts, petals, branches, sticks, mud and water. We make art with them, we pour, press, mix and stamp learning about texture, pressure and shape. This class remind will remind you how important nature is for our wellbeing.

MUSIC AND MOVEMENT
Here we enjoy playing with different instruments, drum circle, try some dance and yoga moves, make different sounds with our voices and shapes with our bodies, we sing nursery rhymes, parents will learn some key massage techniques for calming and soothing, we play with silks and pay attention to how we feel good in our bodies!
Little Art Lab aims to foster a positive body image, healthy attitude to exercise and confidence in their natural abilities.

PROCESS ART
Similar to an Invitation to Create, the emphasis is on the process of creating, not a specific end goal.
Little Art Lab encourages exploration with different art mediums and learning through play in all classes.
Mediums to play with can involve glue, nature, wool and sticks, feathers, glitter, loo paper rolls, paper maché, mud, creating treasure and memory jars, playing with washi tape and many more.
Open ended creative play leads to confidence handling different materials and situations building resilience for life.
It is also a brilliant tool for emotional regulation as they grow up.

Book the 6 week term (save $10): $128
Casual class: $23/child
Siblings: $20/child

Sculpture at Bathers 2020 – Opening Day

Saturday, 15 February, 7am to 10pm
Bathers Beach, Mews Road, Fremantle

Sculpture at Bathers exhibition returns to Fremantle’s Bathers Beach Art Precinct for the fourth time on February 15 – March 2, 2020.

Over 80 sculptures and interactive artworks will be featured along the timber boardwalks, paths, grassed areas, ocean and inside Kidogo Arthouse at the Bathers Beach precinct. Sculpture at Bathers presents the excellence and diversity of Western Australia’s finest and emerging sculptors.. The ‘Distinctively Western Australian’ theme has been highlighted since the establishment of Sculpture at Bathers, in 2013.

“Sculpture at Bathers is a sculpture show concentrating on works by local WA artists and is tremendously important. It has now become a much anticipated and appreciated exhibition. ” Janet Holmes à Court AC, exhibition Patron said.

In creating their sculptures, the artists have considered the physical and cultural attributes of the area, with many producing work in direct response to the site. The Bathers Beach Art Precinct is located at one of the State’s most beautiful and historically significant sites; with the Kidogo Arthouse being a heritage-listed building.

“The coming together of generations of artists is motivated by a common purpose; goodwill and camaraderie. At the heart of this artist run exhibition is the overriding belief that it is important to promote and embed the works of our Western Australian artists in the consciousness of local, national and international audiences” Tony Jones OAM, Chair and Founder said.

“We are excited to see multi-generational families, diverse groups, friends and individuals visit this exceptional display of art in one of WA’s most treasured locations.” Mr Jones continued.

Sculpture at Bathers will feature access tours for people with disabilities, an education program and the previous visitor favourite, the Kelp “pop-up” bar operated by Kidogo Arthouse. Visitors can also visit local food and beverage establishments including Little Creatures Brewery and Bathers Beach House.

“We aim to deliver an enduring quality experience for all involved; artists, volunteers, committee members and audience.” Mr Jones explained.

By providing the experience and a full colour catalogue to visitors for no expense, Sculpture at Bathers hope visitors can leave the precinct knowing there is something special about Western Australian Sculpture. All works are available for purchase, ranging from affordable and intimate pieces that suit domestic or commercial interiors to large sculptural statements that are designed and built for exterior environments.

Little Art Lab 1-4yo

Tuesday, 18 February, 9.15am to 10.15am

Saturday, 22 February, 8pm to 10.30pm
Supreme Court Gardens, Riverside Drive, Perth

A FREE EVENT supported by Lotterywest

A children’s fable or full-blown horror story?

Share the journey of Hansel and Gretel as they leave the warmth of home and enter the alluring dark forest where freedom soon turns to fear as the pair become hopelessly lost. A tasty gingerbread house appears and witches’ trickery follows in this cautionary tale about stranger danger.

Creating the forest in Supreme Court Gardens is media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes (Boorna Waanginy and HOME) who will transform the park using projection, light and image to make this a truly immersive experience.

Enjoy the sumptuous, romantic music by 19th century master Humperdinck, and discover in this glorious opera why Hansel and Gretel is one of the most beloved tales from the pens of the Brothers Grimm. Sung by an extraordinary West Australian cast with the full might of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christopher van Tuinen, this promises to be a delight for the ears and eyes alike.

Nannup Music Festival 2020

Friday, 28 February to Monday, 2 March
20 Brockman Street, Nannup

Nannup Music Festival
28th February – 2nd March 2020
www.nannupmusicfestival.org

Best Live Event in WA – 2018 National Live Music Awards

Celebrating its 31st year in 2020, the much loved Nannup Music Festival presents an eclectic mix of acts over the first weekend of March each year, set to the stunning bush backdrop of Australia’s South West and the small town atmosphere of Nannup; a historic timber town on the banks of the Blackwood River.

We feel that another exciting festival is ahead of us and that 2020 is brewing into something special.

There are so many incredible and diverse acts coming to join us; from the precious Archie Roach, to festival favourites like Kallidad and Hussy Hicks. Stunning acts from Scotland: Fara, The Langan Band and Brighde Chaimbeul. The East Pointers from Canada and Jenny Mitchell from New Zealand. And of course from Australia – urban, regional and remote. There are so many special acts that it’s impossible to begin; acts that may make some squirm or others excited, some to lay and listen to in the warm sun, and others to get up and dance to. We love that our audience differs in age and desire; and the program is made for everyone. New discoveries and old favourites…

And then of course our workshops. Arts and crafts, yoga or dance, songwriting, singing, kids activities. As you may know the Environment and Mental Health are important to us, so we will be sure to have some discussions and hands on activities happening too.
