Tucked away in the alleyway of Shafto Lane is Perth’s only Hokkaido soup curry shop – Rojiura Curry Samurai. Originating from Sapporo with the concept of “Eating a day’s worth of vegetables in a bowl”, this comforting soup curry is perfect for the gloomy winter days! With its rich and flavourful soup bouillon that is shipped directly from Hokkaido to Perth and packed with all WA veggies goodness, it’s no wonder that the restaurant is named one of the Top 100 restaurants in The West Australian Good Food Guide 2024!
The warm ambiance of this spacious restaurant made us feel very welcoming and cosy instantly.
And with excellent Japanese customer service, we were served ice water upon seating, and the kids were offered complimentary orange juice!
Their menu is customisable. You can choose between soup bases and the spiciness level of the curry. A vegan option is available, and I like that they have a monthly special, so there’s always something new to try at the restaurant.
Each bowl of curry is packed with either 11 or 17 types of fresh seasonal veggies!
The board on the wall indicates what veggies are available for the day.
The kid’s meal is reasonably priced at $10.80. The portion sizing is just enough for Missy 6. It came along with a small size rice, chicken karrage and a small bowl of curry that’s generously packed with veggies! Missy 6 is usually quite selective with her veggie intake, but with the curry, she is keen to try them all and raves about it. The kids’ curry is non-spicy, which is perfect for a kid’s palate!
Look at the rainbow goodness of veggies in a bowl!
I highly recommend their crispy chicken Maryland! It’s juicy and so tender that it falls off the bone easily! And don’t mistake it for the common thick Japanese curry; Hokkaido soup curry is much lighter and smoother in texture, but still robust in taste with a slight spicy kick to it!
We had garlicky fried broccoli and cheesy potato mochi as sides, and they were crowd favourites!
It’s definitely a family-friendly restaurant with baby chairs and high chairs available.
The restaurant has toilets, and I really appreciate the thoughtful amenities (blotting papers, toothpicks) that they’ve put in the bathrooms.
There is a small fountain just outside the restaurant which the kids love to hang around after having their meal.
