If you’re looking for a high-quality, engaging and expertly designed music class for your little one, Jiggle Jam is a must-try. Created by passionate music educator Ms Catherine, these sessions offer a vibrant, structured and developmentally appropriate introduction to music for children aged 18 months to 5 years.
As both a mum and a teacher, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that nurture children’s learning in a way that is fun, meaningful and supported by early childhood research. Music and movement have been shown to enhance cognitive, motor and social skills in young children and Jiggle Jam incorporates these elements beautifully. After attending a session with my son, Kai, I can confidently say this is one of the best music classes for young children in Perth.
From the moment we arrived at Mount Claremont Community Centre, Kai was buzzing with excitement. Having already enjoyed Jiggle Jam’s interactive and engaging Toddler Learning episodes on YouTube, he instantly recognised the sign on the door. This familiarity speaks volumes about the thoughtful continuity across Jiggle Jam’s programs—whether online or in person, the experience is seamless.
But nothing could have prepared him for the moment Ms Catherine—his beloved star from the YouTube clips—opened the door. His eyes widened in awe as she bent down to his level, offering a warm smile and a gentle touch to his hand. It was a quiet, special moment and you could see the recognition in his face—this was real.
Ms Catherine welcomed each child warmly by name, setting the tone for a class that felt personal and engaging. The room was arranged with cushions in a circle and musical instruments ready for free play—a brilliant way to help little ones settle in and explore before the structured activities began.
Every Jiggle Jam class follows a clear and predictable structure, helping young children feel secure. The session kicked off with the Jiggle Jam theme song, incorporating actions like tapping knees, clapping hands and jiggling arms to develop rhythm and coordination. The first half of the class focused on songs, instrument exploration and movement activities, building key musical skills. Then, in a seamless transition, Ms Catherine brought the weekly theme to life through music and movement, using the most gorgeous props and engaging activities—in this case, an exciting space adventure!
Kai was captivated when Suzy the puppet appeared, offering a sneaky clue about our theme. We practised keeping the beat with egg shakers, transformed claves into pizza-making tools and explored tempo with body movements. Each instrument came in a new coloured bag, adding an element of surprise and making transitions effortless.
The highlight for Kai? Singing, dancing and zooming around the room with his own plush rocket, counting down from ten for take-off! Later, Ms Catherine passed out planets, guiding the children through a song that encouraged them to roll, balance, throw and catch them before watching them bounce on the parachute.
The class wrapped up with bubbles, a calming mindfulness song, a final high-five from Suzy the puppet, and of course—a sticker (because what little person doesn’t love stickers?). It was the perfect mix of energy, learning and wind-down time.
What truly sets Jiggle Jam apart is the expertise and dedication of its founder, Ms Catherine. With a strong background in music education and early childhood development, she has carefully designed these classes to nurture musical skills while also supporting language development, motor skills, confidence and social interaction.
Inspired by the Kodály method, Ms Catherine incorporates solfa singing (do, re, mi…), rhythm counting and beat-keeping activities in a way that is accessible and engaging for little ones. Her deep understanding of early learning principles is evident in the way she seamlessly blends live music, storytelling and movement into every session.
Beyond her in-person classes, Ms. Catherine has also created Jiggle Jam Academy, an ad-free, child-safe online platform where families can continue musical learning at home. For parents looking for quality screen time, her Toddler and Preschool Learning YouTube episodes—developed in collaboration with speech pathologist Ms Hannah—offer a slow-paced, interactive and educational alternative. With different themed episodes, they’re a hit in our house—Kai loves them! Think of it as Perth’s own version of Ms Rachel.
