Haystack Cafe, Wangara

Based in Wangara, Haystack Cafe is a haven of Balinese goodness. The cafe features a children’s play corner and delicious food for the whole family.

Formerly based at Landsdale Farm, the crew from Haystack Cafe have struck out on their own. While the location may be more industrial, the cafe was cosy and just as peaceful as it’s previous surroundings. The picnic-style tables have been replaced with cafe tables and chairs. The walls are covered with colourful Balinese-style artwork and Balinese music plays over the radio.

We wandered in on a patchy rainy day and Miss 6 headed straight for the play corner. This has a lovely wooden play kitchen with a table, chairs and with wooden food. Miss 6 and another girl also found some colouring in pages and pencils. At one point when we had the cafe to ourselves, Miss 6 collected all the play fruit and veggies and brought them to our tables.

If you’re missing your favourite Indonesian food, Haystack Cafe’s menu features some authentic Balinese dishes. For example, why not enjoy a delicious Bali Satay, Beef Rendang or Nasi Goreng? In addition, the menu includes other favourites such as Haystack Burgers, chicken salad and chicken quesadillas. For kids, there’s smaller dish options such as chicken nuggets and chips, fish and chips, toasted sandwiches, or pancakes for instance.

For our lunch, Miss 6 opted for her favourite chicken nuggets and chips with juice, while I chose a bacon and egg roll with a zesty tomato sauce and a latte. The nuggets dish was a generous size, so much so she said she couldn’t finish it all. The bacon and egg roll was so yummy and filling, and came with a side of crispy chips. Miss 6 loves the chips here. There are always super crunchy, which she loves! I found the coffee to be smooth and not overly strong.

In addition to these hot food options, Haystack Cafe offers a selection of rolls, wraps and cakes in their glass cabinet. There’s biscuits in shiny jars on the top of the cabinet, and Miss 6 spotted a platter of cupcakes under glass and wanted one for the road. So much for being full! 😛

In this strange time of COVID-19, Haystack Cafe in Wangara has been offering takeaway service for dinner in addition to their lunch and breakfast menu. It has been possible to order for delivery through Uber Eats on Friday and Saturday evenings. With winter and things slowing down a little, this has currently been discontinued, but hopefully dinner service will return for summer.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Haystack Cafe and look forward to heading back again soon. It’s a great spot to meet up with a friend with kids or catch up with grandparents. The food is excellent and the service is so friendly, and the cafe is super clean. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit different, add this spot to your list.
