Dumbo Gelato, Scarborough

The newest kid on the Scarborough Beach strip is Dumbo Gelato, an Italian style ice creamery. Located close to the Scarborough Skate Park and Whale Playground, it’s a convenient spot to stop for a treat.

During school holidays, we ventured down to Scarborough Beach for a play and a walk. I’d promised Miss 5 an ice cream, and it was the perfect sunny day to enjoy it.

Dumbo Gelato is a convenient walk from both the playground and the skate park. So we strolled up the Esplanade, arriving just as they opened for the day. Miss 5 barely contain herself!

The shop front has a clean, almost Mediterranean look. There’s simple but comfortable bench seating to the side and bar stool seating nearer the counter.

Miss 5 chose her tried and tested favourite, vanilla gelato, while I chose a strawberry sorbet. These were both generous serves in a waffle cone and cost us $11. For those who prefer it, gelato can also be served in a cup, too. The texture is dense and the flavours rich, but not overly sweet. Miss 5 enjoyed her creamy vanilla, while I loved that my strawberry sorbet was refreshing and contained bits of real strawberry.

There’s lots of flavours to choose from, including some we’d never heard of, such as Gorilla Biscuits. This is a subtle banana gelato with cookies and chocolate chips. Other fun flavours include Bounty, Milo Milkshake, and there’s even a Cheese & Vegemite made with mascapone, cream cheese and Vegemite salted caramel. There are vegan and gluten-free options so no one should have to miss out. There’s also a boozy selection of alcoholic flavours for adults such as Limoncello and Tommy’s Margarita for those nights after dinner where you don’t have to drive home. 😉

Moreover, your dog is even catered for with a lactose-free, peanut butter banana flavoured treat called Bones Brigade available. In other words, the whole family is catered for!

Dumbo Gelato’s frozen delights are made fresh in-store using local ingredients, fresh in-season fruits and organic Margaret River milk.

In addition to delicious ice cream, the menu is slowly expanding to include more than just ice cream. Juices and smoothies are also coming soon. In the meantime, try a spider or a milkshake made with Dumbo’s gelato, or combine hot with cold with a gelato pie, a mix of warm brioche with your choice of ice cream inside. If you need a caffeine hit, why not try an affogato or a cold brew float? Yum!
