Bistro by the Dam is a lovely spot for a cuppa and bite to eat with the kids. Found in the Perth Hills, perched high above Serpentine Dam, this spot has just got even more popular with an addition of a new playground next door. Sit inside, or outside on the verandah where there’s beautiful views of the Serpentine Dam (and control tower) through the gumtrees. It’s also where you may meet a new feathered friend – we hear the birds are very friendly here.
Being a bit chilly, we all sat in a booth indoors. This time, we were there for morning drinks – enjoying a range of coffee (roast by the excellent Brother of Mine), caramel and strawberry milkshakes and iced chocolates – which all got two enthusiastic thumbs up.
On the menu there’s a choice of breakfast favourites, plus lunch items, as well as a good choice for the kids.
There’s a brand new (opened June 2024) playground opposite the bistro. I assume that they do take away coffees too, which would be great to enjoy on a bench, while the kids play.
Afterwards, take the footpath from the rear of the bistro down the (many) steps to the dam itself. It’s not too far, perhaps a 5-to-10-minute walk. Itโs an excellent opportunity for kids to see where our water comes from.
Serpentine Dam is one of nine dams in the Perth Hills that offer walk trails, lookouts, playgrounds and picnic areas. Itโs a great, free day out in nature โ why not check out Churchman Brook Dam near Armadale, or Mundaring Weir too?
