Windsor Park in South Perth is home to a beautifully restored Ferry Tram which offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into local history and transport heritage.
The original 1899 B class tram, which once rattled through the streets of South Perth and Como between 1922 and 1950, was discovered in a Kelmscott backyard and meticulously restored by volunteers from the Perth Electric Tramway Society.
Located in a purpose-built barn at the entrance to Windsor Park, east of Heritage House and close to the original tram line, this historical gem provides an interactive experience for visitors of all ages.
Children will delight in pretending to drive the tram, discovering the flip-seats that change direction depending on travel, and ringing the authentic tram bell.
Inside the barn, you’ll find fascinating historical information about the B15 Tram and the South Perth to Como Line, including a large map showing the tram’s original route. Next door at South Perth Heritage House, an exciting exhibition recounts the complete history of trams in South Perth, featuring stories, old tram films, and even a huge tram gong to ring.
The South Perth Ferry Tram played a significant role in the area’s development, transforming Como from an isolated jetty into a popular resort with dancehalls, refreshment kiosks, cinema and a roller skating rink. During weekends and holidays, the tram lines were extremely busy with excited children and holidaymakers.
The restoration has been faithfully executed to represent how the tram appeared when last in service in 1950. While the roof was in good condition, many wooden parts had to be replaced using patterns from good sections or from another B-class tram.
As you walk through the streets of South Perth, you will also notice old tram stops.
The Ferry Tram is free to visit and open 10am-4pm Thursday to Sunday.
While exploring South Perth, be sure to visit the nearby South Perth Foreshore with its riverside playgrounds, cycle paths, cafes, and other attractions.
