Rising out of the Wheatbelt just outside the town of Hyden, Wave Rock is one of those iconic WA experiences that genuinely lives up to the hype. The enormous granite โwaveโ curls 15 metres high and stretches for more than 100 metres, its stripes and curves formed over some 2.7 billion years. Whether you visit as a big day trip from Perth or stay a night or two, itโs a brilliant adventure for families, especially in wildflower season.

The drive from Perth takes around four hours through classic Wheatbelt scenery. Phone coverage can be patchy in parts, so itโs worth planning stops ahead and keeping an eye out for the quirky roadside attractions that break up the journey. Kids tend to love the Tin Horse Highway near Kulin, where youโll spot a whole parade of crazy tin horses along the roadside, and the much-loved dog cemetery is a sweet, if slightly emotional, stop for animal lovers.

Once you arrive, the main attraction is of course Wave Rock itself. If youโre staying at Wave Rock Caravan Park or the resort, entry to the rock is included; otherwise, a visitor fee applies. The walking track from the car park to the base of the wave is short, wide and relatively flat, making it manageable for most ages and fitness levels, including younger children. As you get closer, the sheer scale of the โwaveโ really hits โ itโs impossible not to take a million photos of the kids โsurfingโ the rock.

For families with older children or confident walkers, there are several access points to climb onto the top of Hyden Rock. The walk up is steeper and more demanding than the short trail to the base, but plenty of families do it. The rock surface can be slippery when wet, so enclosed shoes are a better choice than thongs, and youโll want to keep a close eye on kids near the edges, as there are long drops in places. The reward is sweeping views across the Wheatbelt landscape, and if you time it for late afternoon, the sunsets from up there are spectacular.

Beyond the classic โwaveโ shots, itโs worth slowing down and exploring the wider rock and the surrounding bush. There are several marked walk trails and circuits around the area, including routes that connect Wave Rock with Hippoโs Yawn and the nearby resort and Lake Magic. In spring, the walks are especially beautiful, with carpets of wildflowers and the sound of birds and breezes in the sheoaks. Even younger kids tend to enjoy rock-hopping and exploring the nooks and crannies, while less adventurous family members can happily perch on a bench and soak up the views.

Hippoโs Yawn is another highlight that kids usually adore. This huge granite outcrop does look a lot like a yawning hippopotamus, and the inside makes for fun (and very Instagrammable) hide-and-seek style exploring. The loop walk from Wave Rock to Hippoโs Yawn is an easy way to stretch little legs, and the same trail can also lead you on towards the resort side of the precinct, including Lake Magic.

Lake Magic and the adjacent salt baths are a short drive or walk from Wave Rock Caravan Park and resort. Lake Magic is a photogenic, shimmering salt lake, and the manโmade salt pool beside it is designed for a Dead Seaโstyle floating experience, with superโsalty water that makes you very buoyant. Itโs a unique spot for a nonโsinking dip and an especially memorable experience for kids who havenโt tried this kind of swimming before. Check current conditions and opening details locally, as facilities can change over time.
If youโre staying longer or have active kids, thereโs a lot more to see and do around Hyden than just the main rock. Mulkaโs Cave and The Humps, about 15km from Wave Rock, are well worth adding to your itinerary for another dose of dramatic granite and local history. Around the Wave Rock precinct itself, youโll also find a wildlife park, a Lace Place museum, the Miniature Soldier Museum and Pioneer Town, all clustered near the Wave Rock Cafรฉ. Entry fees apply to the attractions (but not the gift shop), so itโs worth checking prices and opening times when you plan your day.

Food and drink options around Wave Rock and Hyden include the Wave Rock Cafรฉ, which also serves as the entrance to the gift shop and some of the small museums. It generally opens 9amโ5pm, though if youโre counting on a late lunch or afternoon hot meal, itโs wise to check kitchen hours in advance. In town, there are additional dining choices via the Wave Rock Hotel and other local venues listed under the โEat & Drinkโ section of the official Wave Rock website, from pub bistro options to cafes and takeaway.
Accommodation-wise, families are spoilt for choice. The Wave Rock Caravan Park sits right by the rock and is a very convenient base if you want to wander over at sunrise or sunset without having to drive. Thereโs also the Wave Rock Resort with self-contained villas overlooking Lake Magic, plus the Wave Rock Hotel in Hyden town, camping options and backpacker-style accommodation. Staying overnight means you can enjoy a Wheatbelt night sky, stargaze without city lights and experience the area at quieter times of day, when the light on the rock is particularly beautiful.

For planning your visit, the official Wave Rock website has a dedicated โPlan Your Visitโ section, including driving directions, travel advice, and tips for exploring the region via the โPathways to the Rockโ drive trail. Youโll also find information on local tours, including Indigenous cultural tours and guided walks, as well as details of events held at Wave Rock, such as the popular music festival in spring.
Whether you visit for a day or linger for a couple of nights to take in the wider attractions, Wave Rock is a standout WA family adventure. Between the epic rock formations, the quirky roadside sights, the wildflowers, and the chance to float in a salt lake under endless outback skies, itโs an experience the kids wonโt forget in a hurry.
