The Island at Elizabeth Quay

If youโ€™re visiting Elizabeth Quay with your family, casual restaurant The Island is well worth stopping at, to fuel your day exploring the city. The spot found on EQโ€™s โ€œislandโ€ is home to a microbrewery, restaurant and garden bar. We, the six of us, had been escaping from Escape This on Hay Street Mall. Afterwards, we wandered down to see the sights of Elizabeth Quay, and find a bite to eat. Despite it being school holidays, the waiter found an outside table for us.

Though I would rather have a table on the city side (for the view) our spot was handy, as we could also see the playground. Before we knew it, the kiddos were gone and climbing the pirate-themed equipment.

The interior of the iconic Florence Hummerston Kiosk is bright and airy, but I’d always recommend sitting outside, to enjoy that amazing view of the city skyline and Elizabeth Quay. I love that this building was saved and brought brick by brick from its original spot on the Esplanade.

Order at the bar, or via QR code – on the menu are lots of crowd-pleasing favourites like share plates, fresh salads, fish n chips, parmi, steak sandwiches, hand stretched pizzas and burgers. Plus, there looks to be more elevated dishes like bao, beef short ribs, osso buco and indulgent seafood platters – if you want to push the boat out.

The “nippers” menu for little people has the usual options โ€“ slider, cheese pizza, fish n chips, and nuggets (made with real chicken). We’re not too sure if colouring sheets are still available, but since it was a nice day, the kids made the most of the neighboring Elizabeth Quay playground

The chicken is good quality (proper chicken tenders) and served with a generous pile of chips and sauce. The J Man enjoyed this, even though he usually prefers a crispy nugget.

I enjoyed a two share plates, crisp paprika salt and lemon pepper squid, plus chips, – not realising how generous they would be!

Mr H and the teenager both enjoyed their golden Little Island Pale Ale battered fish and chips (with SO much fish!), served with a generous dressed side salad. The crisp batter is made with their own beer, brewed on site. The salad has a tasty maple and mustard dressing, and the tartare sauce is house made. It’s definitely worth the $35 price tag.

We all were happy with our lunch at The Island – that’s two or three good lunches I’ve enjoyed there over the years. You’ll pay a little extra, given the location. The Island has a friendly vibe and great views, so we’d return again if in the area.
