Staying in the city with kids? Luckily, during our stay at Pan Pacific Perth, we discovered Hill Street Bar, conveniently located downstairs in the hotel. It was exactly what we needed: a casual, lively spot where families can settle in, kids are welcome, and everyone can find something they fancy on the menu. With its relaxed pub-style atmosphere, it took the stress out of heading back out into the city after a busy day.

We started with the fried squid, crispy garlic squid served with pickled cabbage and a spiced pineapple sugo. It had a delicious sweet-and-tangy kick and was a great sharing dish to begin with.

For mains, Mr H tucked into the fish and chips, with local reef fish in a crisp beer batter, served alongside chunky beer-battered chips and aioli. It was a classic done well. I ordered the poke bowl, which was packed full of flavour: brown rice topped with cured salmon, cucumber, edamame, charred corn, avocado, Asian slaw, sesame dressing and harissa aioli. A fresh, tasty, colourful option when you’re craving something a little lighter – I’m always accidentally healthy (being gluten free). But this time it was worth it.

The kids’ menu was a winner too, with three simple family favourites that were easy to please even the fussiest of little diners. There was spaghetti with tomato sauce and parmesan…

A crispy chicken schnitzel with beer-battered chips, Plus, a mini fish and chips portion. No negotiating or bribing with soft drinks required, which is always a sign of a successful dinner out.

After gelato and sorbet for the kids, everyone left with full, happy tummies.

Hill Street Bar would also be a handy choice for families dining before an event in East Perth or at nearby Langley Park. Being within the Pan Pacific Perth, it’s particularly convenient if you’re staying overnight, but you certainly don’t need to be a hotel guest to enjoy it. With its welcoming vibe, pub-style dishes and grown-up menu that goes beyond the usual, Hill Street Bar is a relaxed and easy option for family dining in the city.

Hill Street Bar is open 7 days and located on the lobby level at Pan Pacific Perth, 207 Adelaide Terrace, Perth.
