Fremantle’s heart has had a lot of new additions recently. There’s the Walyalup Koort playground, new Fremantle Library and the FOMO dining and entertainment complex. Another shiny new spot is the family-friendly Old Courthouse. As its name suggests, it was in fact the port town’s courthouse for many decades. After it was decommissioned, it lay dormant and empty until it opened it’s doors back up in December 2021, as a restaurant and bar.
The Old Courthouse has plenty of fun with its colourful past. Just some infamous people that have passed through the courtroom and stood in the timber dock are Bon Scott (ACDC’s original front man), the murderous Bernie couple and Alan Bond. You can even stand in the dock yourself!
Another fun photo opp is a rouge’s gallery of past criminals. You can stand against the wall and choose a fitting crime!
There is a new pavilion, as well as an outside area, to enjoy a drink under the dappled shade.
A sandpit will keep little ones busy and they can run around the fenced grassed area too. High chairs are available.
The aptly named “Juvies” kids menu, got a giggle from me. Kids meals all cost $16, which is inclusive of a choice of juices and soft drinks, as well as a tub of il Gelato. There are a few decent meal choices, a much better selection than your average chicken nuggets etc, including roast chicken and veggies.
Little Chef enjoyed the fish and chips, which came along with a small side salad.
Little Chef then devoured a tub of the Cotton Candy il Gelato and declared it to be the best flavour ever.
I picked a light caprese salad, with heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil and an addition of shredded chicken (served chilled). It was fresh, tasty and well presented. Other items on the menu include steak, pasta, share plates and their specialty rotisserie cooked roast chicken.
The Old Courthouse Fremantle has been wonderfully restored and is a great spot for a family meal. The kids might even learn a thing or two about local Freo history!
Find The Old Courthouse at 45 Henderson Street, Fremantle (behind the markets).
