Sculpture by the Sea is back at Cottesloe Beach for 2023! The free public art exhibition is on until 20 March. This year’s exhibition features sculptures by more than 70 artists from around the world, including 28 talented West Australians.
Art is so subjective and personal, which is my favourite thing about Sculpture by the Sea. I love watching people looking at, trying to understand and embracing all the sculptures.
There are so many incredible sculptures this year, one of my favourites is Benoit by French artist Bruno Catalano. The incredible sculpture represents the positivity of moving forward despite the possible adversities of life.
My daughter and I had loads of fun taking selfies with Labyrinth by Perth artist Erica Zaino. The interactive piece features curved mirrors spanning 8m along the beach.
If you are looking for something a little sweeter, be sure to check out Jason Hirst’s Kiss Me installation inspired by Swizzels Kind Hearts.
Visitors are encouraged not to touch most of the sculptures, however, there are some ‘safe to touch’ sculptures. There is a green hand on the sign beside the sculptures that are safe to touch.
I recommend downloading the free Sculpture by the Sea app, it includes an interactive map that makes it easier to navigate around the exhibitions and discover details about the artworks and the talented artists who created them. The app is available from the App Store & Google Play.
Another hot tip, make sure you bring the kids bathers and a towel because there is no way they will be able to resist not jumping into the ocean 😉
Special matting will be installed from Tuesday 14 – Thursday 16 for visitors with limited mobility or using wheelchairs to access the sculpture exhibited on the beach. Visitor service assistants will be on site to meet and greet, direct and inform visitors from 9.30am-6.30pm.
