Did you know that your local library might have 3D printers available for you to use for free? Our local library has been one of our favourite places to hang out, especially during the school holidays, as there are always some fun activities happening and something new for the kids to try out. During the last school holiday, Missy 10 attended a lesson on Tinkercad at Riverton Library, where she was taught how to use the program to make and print models on the 3D printers.

The Tinkercad lesson was held at the Makerspace Studio room inside the library, where all the 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines and overlockers are kept.

Parents were able to join the lesson as we were briefed on the basics of Tinkercad. Laptops were provided to the children, and they had a go at designing their own models.

They then watched their model getting printed at the 3D printers and were taught to put on safety gear when removing their model from the printers.

They also get to use 3D printing pens to make their objects.

Missy 6 was too young to join the lesson, so she had a chance to play other STEM activities like the GraviTrax.

To use the equipment in the Makerspace Studio room, users must be 16 years old and above (adults can bring their children 12-15 years old into the studio). Users are required to be library members and book a short induction session for the equipment that they want to use. Only then can you reserve it online and use it afterwards.

Riverton Library is conveniently located beside the Riverton Leisureplex, where the café, gym and swimming pool are. The children book section has a lovely welcoming space with colourful murals where toddlers can join in for their Rhyme and Stories times.

Books are arranged at the children’s height, so it’s very easy for them to browse and pick their books.

They can also use the self-check loaning machine to borrow their books easily.

I like that there are many reading corners that is comfortable for them to choose from to read and rest.

Jigsaws puzzles and library of things such as items and games are available to loan for home too.

Plenty of study desks and rooms for quiet study with WIFI availability in the library. Riverton Library also host art exhibitions like the Canning Arts Awards regularly.
