A weekend drive to a historic Perth Hills pub is a favourite thing for us to do. The Mount Helena Tavern, which is over 110 years old, is just minutes from the center of Mundaring and Lake Leschenaultia. Brimming with rustic charm and character, the pub welcomes kids with open arms. Outside, the huge beer garden is a popular spot to chill.
Known locally as “The Mounties” the traditional Australian pub has a bar area, games area with pool tables, and cosy lounge areas with Chesterfield sofas and open fireplaces – perfect for a chilly hills day!
Dine in the formal dining room inside or find a spot in the beer garden.
The large grassy beer garden has had a massive makeover. Gone are the well-worn swing set and boat, now there’s a super cool playground for little ones to explore. The train themed playground is a nod to the area’s steam train history. The Mount Helena Tavern sits right on the iconic Railway Reserve Heritage trail (a popular spot for a family bike ride or walk).
There are plenty of tables overlooking the kid’s play area. A beautiful timber train has pride of place, which has a built-in slide, tunnel and more. It’s brilliant for little train drive wannabes.
A nest swing will keep the kids happy too. It would be great to see shade sails put up.
A winter stream runs alongside, so be sure to watch those little ones!
The Mount Helena Tavern has a big menu with all the pub favourites – burgers, fish n chips, steak, pizza, tacos, salads and more. There’s plenty of specials on throughout the week too, including a Sunday roast. We’d just had a picnic at Lake Leschenaultia, so didn’t feel like much eating on this occasion. The kids tucked into nuggets and chips. There’s a mini burger and fish n chips too. High chairs are also available.
Mr H was impressed with their smash burger – high praise indeed.
I enjoyed a super fresh, crisp Ceasar salad, with a side of yummy sweet potato fries.
And there’s colouring in to keep kids busy at the dining table. As well as a kids corner with books and toys.
The Mount Helena Tavern is a lovely spot in the Perth Hills. We felt very welcome at the Mount Helena Tavern – service has a friendly country feel. The pub food is tasty, unpretentious and good value.
