Margaret River is more than a town and a popular wine region. Many people forget that it is an actual river! A trip to the “River Mouth” is a good idea for beach lovers and sightseers alike. The popular surf break is busy year-round, but there’s plenty of parking and facilities.
The river mouth itself winds from the east, stopping just shy of actually meeting the ocean (in summer). This creates a visual feast, as well as multiple options for the kiddos to explore, swim and paddle. Some Margaret River adventure tours also start from this point.
We found a beautiful sculpture here, which is by artist Russell Sheridan. It’s of a lady “Layla” sitting on a rock, breastfeeding a baby whale.
The Indian Ocean has been pretty intense at this spot, each time that I’ve visited. The Margaret River provides a calm, and warmer swimming spot. At the Rivermouth car park, there is a wooden lookout area with ramps down to the sand. There are showers, toilets, changing facilities and lifeguards often on duty too.
Kids will love to explore the rockpools, just be wary of big waves if the ocean is choppy. There are some lovely shallow spots to play and look for sea creatures. We spotted a crab or two.
If you enjoy a wander, take the footpath along the coastline to Surfers Point. Next time you’re in Margs, be sure to seek out the Margaret River.
Find Margaret River Mouth on Wallcliffe Rd, Prevelly.
