Silly Goose Review
Just a hop from the Maylands train station is a neighbourhood hang out that labels itself as a cafe by morning, restaurant and bar in the afternoon til late. Basically telling you that you can come by for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a nightcap! Silly Goose (formally Brixton Yar) has bought a real relaxed vibe where it focuses on being a family and pet friendly venue.
When you are there, you will quickly realise it used to be an old mechanics workshop which houses the kitchen, bar and many dining spaces. The winning part of this venue is the pretty tree-lined courtyard (thanks to previous owners Little Shop of Plenty) where you can watch the trains go by…also a winner with my little one.
I have been here a few times now with and without kids so I have had the opportunity to enjoy different things from the lunch menu. There is a large range of two-handed meals (burgers) to choose from with several options/add ons as well as fresh salads and delicious sounding share bites. Whatever you pick, you won’t go wrong or leave feeling hungry. My favourite picks would have to be the mouth watering pulled pork burger, moreish sweet potato fries and the salty/tangy combo of the haloumi salad.
If dining with kids, you will be thrilled to know that there is a decent kids menu ranging from $10-$14. You can expect burgers, fish, chicken nuggets and even steak! All meals come with fries (of course).
Brixton Yard meets all the basics of a great family dining venue and has also created space for a kids area that included play kitchens and a large blackboard. This was a nice touch although it was clear that it wasn’t properly maintained and some of the things could be turfed or cleaned. That being said, it won’t stop us from going here!
